currently I am using (I'm going through again) the prod, nano-sword, the baton (for innocents who get in the way), a heavily modded crossbow (high range, laser sight, scope, accuracy, etc. etc.), silenced sniper rifle (heavily modded), and a GEP to take out doors, bots, cameras, security traps, etc.

I had two main weapon/inventory combos the first few times I played.
First time, pistols/melee:
pistol/stealth pistol, crossbow--for general killing
Dragon's tooth + melee aug 4th level--for most doors, safes, cameras if you can jump to them
This leaves room for a gep or flamethrower--I always pick flamethrower. the very first thing I upgrade fully is melee aug, after that I'm always full of lockpicks. That way, lams can be used for all big armored enemies, flamethrowers for all situations you would normally need an assault rifle for (lots of troops swarm you--gas grenade, they all bunch up, flame 'em). The only thing this combo has a hard time with is commandos--they're resistant to both tranq and flame. This is actually why I like the stealth pistol--a double tap headshot will usually do the trick. Oh, and small spider bots are difficult without the spy drone
Second time rifles/melee:
This is actually my favorite, but it's overpowered and sometimes redundant. For instance, dragon's tooth is a nice lockpick, but you have to spend a lot of melee aug upgrades/skill points to fully use it, when the sniper rifle does the same trick. bots are no problem at all--sabot for spiders, HE ammo for any biggies. Commandoes go down easy with sabot too, or assault rifle, or sniper rifle. no room for a heavy weapon though.
Basically, you have three enemies in the game. Soft targets (humans, MIB's, greasels), armored targets (karkian, commandos, bots), and doors. Then you have alternative means for killing different groups, as a secondary means of elimination (EMP attack, hacking--bots, tranq--soft targets, explosive--armored targets, lockpicks--doors).
You need to have at least one good weapon in each category, and not too much overlap in one or you'll be wasting equipment. Sniper bullets are better spent on people than doors, the sword is not as good on people but it doesn't use ammo, so the sword is probably my most favorite weapon due to versatility. That and the crossbow--amazing versatility, although it's the not the absolute best sniper tool, not the best quick firing take down tool, but it is the best silent takedown tool.
I like to play a game with only the crossbow, riot prod, and a few grenades. Add the sword and you won't even need lockpicks.
I would absolutely love to play through the game with ONLY a sniper rifle, but I'd have to cheat for more ammo.

My favorite weapons combination (not that anyone asked me or anything, but... :)):
Mini-crossbow: First weapon I take, and I keep it throughout the game. I love that thing. Tiny and quiet and works in water, with a variety of useful functions...what's not to like really? :)
Regular pistol: for midrange fights or short-range sniping, however you like to look at it. :) Alternately, if I have set myself a "non-lethal takedowns unless absolutely necessary to kill" restriction, the riot prod.
Dragon's Tooth: for breakable items and in the event of being surprised when sneaking, or when low on ammunition.
Sniper rifle: Just in case.
This left me plenty of room to carry around Soy Food/medkits/multitools/lockpicks/a variety of grenades/thermoptic camo/quest items, most of the time anyway. A combination of sneaking and hacking resolved most of my other issues in the game. :)

other weapon besides the knife(or crate-opener ;)) I usually carry. As you said, it's extremely useful. I mod the hell out of it to compensate for downgrading the pistol skill at the start... master rifles as early as possible, which I have found to be most efficient, and only carry the assault shotgun/rifle and the sniper. Which leaves plenty of room for everything else. :cheeky:

Yes. I like to emphasize the melee (low tech) weapons using this combo. Think of
it as Ninja style. Human kills via knife/sword/throwing knife or hacking/scramble
grenades. Exception granted for situations with multiple MIBs and mechs. (All
MJ12 must die!)
