Hello all. I am new to this forum. I just finished DX and I think this game ROCKS! What a great story--it's almost like playing through a good movie!
Anyway, I was just wondering which weapons everyone kept in their inventory. I had a very hard time deciding because so many took up a lot of room, but they all had their advantages. For example, I kept the (silenced) sniper rifle, assault rifle, and GEP gun in my inventory for most of the game. I really didn't have any room for anything else, with all of my multitools, lockpicks, medkits, etc. I even got rid of my binoculars, crossbow, regular shotgun, and armor.
I really would have liked to have kept the assault shotgun, flamethrower, and maybe the plasma gun, but there was no room.
I am now playing through for a second time and have definately decided to keep my crossbow. I think the flamethrower might be good because it is easy to take people out and doesn't really use ammo. But it's hard to resist the GEP gun...and the assault shotgun...
Trying to reach that balance between weapons that do different things (take people out silently, or from a distance, or take several people out, or blow up robots) is pretty hard.
What does everyone else think?

I just think the Dragon Tooth sword should only take up one or, at most, two slots in inventory, since it's only a handle while in storage! :p

my solution to this is simple: pick one weapon to specialize in. the first game i had the assault rifle, auto shotgun, dragon's tooth (and i've thought about too, gage) and an assortment of scramblers, lams, and emps (i hadn't realised the true power of the gas grenade). i found that by the end of the game, you didn't really need medpacks or rebreathers or anything else you can aug. my second game: mr. pistol man, i called it. upgrade to advanced in the creation screen, and pick one other skill to upgrade (in my case, computers. gotta hack those atms). then, do the essentials while you get the skill points. third time: sniper man. it's a great gun for long range, and head shots can still take down in close quaters. 4th: shotgun. i never thought i could do it, but by the end of the game i could take out simons in three sabot rounds to the head with the sawed off. and i've always wanted to do "jedi" mode, using crowbars and things until i can get the dragon's tooth..then...he he he. come into combat, whip out the ol' lizard incisor, flip on combat strength, speed, and ballistic protection, not to mention a mastery in the meele skill...betcha i could take out a room of mibs...
thats just my two (or three, or four) cents. this is an interesting thread. keep em comin.

Watch your ass if you're doing this with a Dragon's Tooth though...you could end up taking yourself out in the explosion.
Try the prod instead.

I usually carry the smaller weapons. With a scoped Stealth pistol and master skill, I can take out soldiers at a distance.

Hmmm...some good ideas. I think the designers probably had in mind that you pick a couple of weapons and get good at those. But there are so many that just kick butt! In my current game (2nd time thru) I have collected the assault rifle, sniper rifle, assault shotgun, crossbow, GEP gun, and pistol. I definately won't have room for the Dragon's Tooth (I think it should take up one spot also). My question is: if you ditch the GEP, how can you take out security bots if you have to (or want to)?
Spoiler:
Remember you have to take some out at Vandenburg.

And don't try to tell me that LAMs are just as good--not even close. Do LAMs work a lot better if you upgrade to Advanced/Master skill?

Uhhhm, everything works a lot better if you upgrade its skill to advanced or master. :)
As for dealing with bots without the GEP, heck, it's a lot more interesting that way. In many places you can reprogram them, in others you simply avoid them (they hear nothing and their paths are often predictable), and other times the environment within the game gives you an opportunity to destroy them.

If you absolutely, positively, HAVE to kill a bot (very rare), 20MM HE ammo for the assault rifle. Kaboom. I think there are maybe six or eight bots in the whole game that receive that treatment from me, and at least four of those are in the very last level. The best part about that is that you hardly even have to carry the thing around; assault rifles are so common that you can just pick one up anywhere you might conceivably need it.
And yes, in a pinch, LAMs will do it, as will EMPs. Scramblers can be fun, too. The point is that there are just so many options for dealing with bots (and opening doors) that I really can't justify having the monstrous GEP gun taking up so much inventory space. :)

Scrambler grenades can have odd effects, however, and bots will go after pretty much anything that moves (which can be a problem if you're trying to play non-lethal).
I've always liked the simple sawed-off shotgun with sabot rounds. This is especially useful with the big military bots since they turn so slowly that you can easily keep behind them.

I have found that one of the best things to take out a bot, level four spy drone aug. The enimies never lock on with missles, and tend to have bad enough accuracy that you don't need Agressive defense aug.

About those bots:

Spoiler:
There are two LAW rockets available outside the main building (you'll have to look - up somewhere on the roof I believe) that you can use to destroy the two large military bots. They will destroy a military bot with one shot, but they aren't guided like the GEP rounds so make sure you have a good shot before firing. Also, you can only carry one at a time, so you'll have to destroy one large bot, go back and get the second LAW, then go and destroy the other one. As for the two security bots, they can be taken out fairly easily with LAMs or EMP grenades. But the easiest method, IMO, is to activate the two Chinese military bots that X-51 has once you've destroyed MJ12's two big bots. The military bots will make short work of the security bots and the MJ12 commandos.
