Surprised no one has mentioned how awful the boss battle is. 'Bombs away, boy scout!' should not be in a dx game. It's really forced and just doesn't seem to fit the tone, and it's no fun at all.
Overall, I really like this game. It plays like a cross between the original, Bloodlines, and MGS. I'm really enjoying it, especially the city wandering. It's kind of strange how the apartments all look the same inside, like Oblivion dungeons or something, but as a whole I'm pleased. I haven't played a new game I liked this much in years.

Glad to hear it, Froghawk. I've staunchly avoided the leak, but the impression I get is that it's pretty damn awesome as long as you're willing to accept that it's not 100% Deus Ex Prodigy, so to speak. Some of the boss stuff, and the forced cutscene actions, sounds pretty misguided, but if its overall a great game than I'll be happy.

Never did post(
http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/05/16/pc-gamer-uk-podcast-55-%E2%80%93-deus-ex-human-revolution-interview-special/) this, I know it's old, but I just now listened to it.
The art director sounds like a pretty cool dude, he even mentions how he didn't really like the second deus ex, so he appears to understand deus ex. Though I never played through either game so I can't really agree or disagree, but he does seem to take the "lets hate on sequels that were done poorly" opinion that is around these parts.

You know, I totally understand a lot of the flak that IW gets but I feel it was a fairly solid game in its own right.
I see loads of HR interviews where they talk about going back to the approaches of the first game and so forth, as if that's the only one that did anything right. I don't know if the question has ever been asked/answered or not (if anyone's aware of somewhere where it has been, please direct me), but I'd really be interested to hear whether the developers recognised anything that had been done well in IW and tried to incorporate that.

I doubt they would publicly say so even if they did.

Was there ANYthing that IW did better than the first game? I'm honestly trying to think of one thing and am coming up blank.
edit: I realize now my question should have been more fair: was there anything IW did right that was not also done right in the first game? (this more accurately addresses DarkForge's comment).

You could mantle in IW. Because seriously, having to fetch an 80cm high crate to get up on an 1,6m high one was utterly ridiculous in DX1, and is utterly ridiculous in HR too.
polytourist97 on 8/7/2011 at 20:15
Huh, interesting. I don't think I even tried to mantle while playing IW, never knew it was in there. That or it's been so long since I've played it I just don't remember.
The one thing I thought IW did pretty well was combat/shooting. In DX that aspect was certainly functional, but it wasn't one of the highlights.

I haven't been paying much attention to the game until the last week or so, and by God, it looks pretty damn good. Really good actually.
Of course IW looked really great too just before release. And although I thought it was better than most, it still didn't live up to it's predecessor.
Still it's a day one purchase for me. I just can't help myself. :p
