Am I becoming Spectorized?
Sounds like you're just getting older. It's tough to find the time for a 50-hour epic, let alone replay such a game even once. Again I bring up Arx Fatalis, because that's the only modern game I've ever replayed immediately upon completing it, and I did so several times - I wouldn't have even considered it if it hadn't been so short, and I'm genuinely hoping Dark Messiah is not a long game for the same reason.

Unless there's something Stitch hasn't been telling me he's the manliest man that ever manned.
As for me I haven't played computer games
period in years. The last game I sunk any time into was Half-Life 2 and before that I can't even remember.
The Thief games were great but I'm kinda in Stitch's boat. I beat both of them (in reverse order) but I wasn't able to get any replay value out of them. I loved the world and the mythos and all that but the gameplay was just too much work and I could never get back into it. I did eventually play through System Shock 2 due to these forums.
As for other games I just recently bought an X-Box 360 and have been working my way through Call of Duty 2, getting my ass handed to me in DOA4 and plan on plunging into Oblivion this weekend. Having been a computer gamer since elementary school I suppose you could say I'm a traitor to the cause but I prefer to think of it as returning to my roots since I cut my gaming teeth on the Nintendo and Super Nintendo.
The way I see it given the way the computer gaming industry is these days, the way the console market is moving, and the kind of games that get made on both platforms, console gaming is just less of a hassle than computer gaming. I don't have time for marathon sessions on some complicated strategy game, I need something I can jump into and out of quickly while lounging on my couch.

after you get bored of Thief, you should try Thievery UT ;)

I think part of the problem is stealth gameplay tends to be fairly tense, and after about an hour of that I'm ready to head out into the sunshine and relax.
I rest my case.
Thief had no replay value for me either, but as I said, for different reasons. It remains one of the most brilliant gaming experiences of my life, and likely always will.
I lament the apparent passing of massive, epic games. I could really sink my teeth into games like the Baldur's Gate series. Stuff like Max Payne 2, as an example, are great, but way too short to really satisfy. The tricky part is maintaining a high level of quality, and thereby interest, throughout the duration of a long game, admittedly more difficult for a one-trick pony like MP2. I suppose the current trend in game development precludes that sort of massive scale of development in most cases, but I really don't see that as an improvement.

I frequently reconsider running through Thief and Thief II again.
5 minutes in ThiefGen is enough to talk me out of it.

As much as I like the basic stealth gameplay aesthetic (especially as implemented by Thief), I play computer games for one reason only and that is to enjoy myself and unwind a bit at the end of the day. Some people watch television, I squeeze in an hour of gaming. While I enjoy a great sequence of building tension, I find it is somewhat tiring if that's the sole tone the game is offering. Any good game will keep me occupied for weeks, and Thief's relentless tunnel vision of tone doesn't age real well with me.
On a similar note, I love a good suspense film that turns the screws painfully for two hours, but I wouldn't want to watch one every day.

I haven't played the Thief series in ages. I don't really play computer games all that much anymore, mostly roguelikes when I'm in the mood. However I have been getting balls deep in Oblivion, and there's enough sneaking around like a goofy faggot in that game to last a lifetime.
I mostly hang out on TTLG because IRC is fun and the forums are just a conditioned response to seeing an internet browser.

You can play all three Thief OMs without ever going to ThiefGen, you know; not a prerequisite last I heard.
