I don't have much time to keep track of development of FMs and fan projects... Therefore I play only selected few of them with excellent ratings. Surely they are great but when I find time for gaming I am either attracted to new games or I replay some old classics. I always praised RPGs for their high replayability, but it has turned out I can't find much time to replay them as often as I'd wish to.

Yeah, I still play them every now and then when the mood strikes, especially Thief 2. It's almost more enjoyable for me to play them now, as my current computer is much better then the one I had when I first played the Thief games (that is, they load up quicker now, no slow down, stuff like that). I played System Shock 1 for the first time a few months ago and loved it. System Shock 2 is great but it's such an exhaustive, draining game I rarely ever play it the whole way through.
I recently played Deus Ex for the first time and thought it was great. I guess I'll play the sequel next. I actually don't really play many computer games (I think the last game I purchased was "The Movies") but I loved those Looking Glass-ish games from the late 90's, early 2000's. Looking for more stuff like that. Any suggestions? (I hear the upcoming "Bioshock" will be SS2's spiritual successor?)

I have copies of Thief 2 & 3 lying around, haven't really played either. Just haven't been in the mood yet, and I've been playing a lot of CS :o

Like, how many years of CS?

other stealth games are shit
I get the same feeling... every other stealth game I've played just seems to miss the point in various ways, and the mistake that seems most common and most obvious to me is funneling the action into a pre-ordained path. In Thief you've usually got very open areas and various ways to reach several objectives in whatever order you like; in Splinter Cell, for example, it's pretty much A to B, with little or no choice in your approach to each incident along the way. The latter approach doesn't really test my sneaky skills at all, it just tests my ability to read the level.
Oddly enough, despite the game having more than its fair share of problems, Arx Fatalis gave me the most Thief-like experience outside of the original games. The stealth system worked (and was accommodated into level design)a lot better than I thought it would; that and the freedom of exploration and action really gave me a Thief-like feeling (bearing in mind that the game is rather primitive in some ways, and that stealthy play makes you an assassin rather than a thief). So I have high hopes for Dark Messiah - Arkane have been quite vocal about their use of LG-style design principles, and they've brought in some fantastic talent to work on the game. Hopefully the assassin playing style will be the closest thing to Thief yet.

I liked the Thief games, but not enough to beat any of them, and certainly not enough to play FMs.
That also sums it up for me. Could never really bring myself to play past the later levels. The game paradigm is of most interest to me, and I have particular favourite missions that I feel make the most of it, but I wouldn't consider playing the games through again. I put the experience of discovery higher than other gameplay considerations, so I rarely find myself playing games all the way through repeatedly.

I think the real die-hard, play-it-forever Thief crowd tends to stick with the Thief forums. Commchat seems more of a, "come for the game, stay for the idiots" crowd.
ps. i didn't know stitch was a chick

And one more thing: My view on games' length is slowly changing from "the longer the better" to "shorter is fine, but it better provide me some really intense pleasure". Am I becoming Spectorized?

I still play both Shock games regularly. Not the games Thief though, those I've only played through once, but I've been meaning to play them again.
