I had a terrible experience where I woke up to literally see a guy standing over my bed. He was facing away, shining a torch around looking for valuables, but in that moment I understood the phrase "blood turned to ice" better than ever before. Thankfully the alarm went off mere seconds later - no idea why - and they fled out the same window they broke to get in.
Oh. My. God.
Dude, I am speechless. That is unbelievable.

When my parents divorced in '97 my dad went into overtime asshole mode. We can't prove it, but we're pretty sure he's broken into our house twice. The first time scared mom so bad that she installed a security system. We've had to break into his house- which was perfectly legal, because he had illegally changed the locks so we couldn't get what was rightfully ours- a couple of times, which got my dad's sister Deanna to come down and threaten to sue etc. and she called the cops who told her to STFU. Dad was not happy about the whole incident (he was in the hospital at the time.)
Then came December '99.
I'd come down with an awful case of the flu the day before, and so I ended up staying home from school. At some point I woke up because my dog Carle (pronounced Car-lee) was barking her fool head off and it was pissing me off, so I yelled in my flu-fueled stupor, "SHUT UP"
Woke up an hour later to notice that the hallway light was on and there was stuff laying on the floor. There was also one fuck of a draft. Unable to sleep any more, I slipped downstairs and noticed the entire house had been ransacked, and the glass door in the kitchen had been smashed. We didn't have any security measures for broken windows, only for if the door had been opened, which the robbers had avoided by just going through it. The motion sensor we had was turned off too because I kept tripping it every time I needed to piss.
The first place I called was my grandparents, who lived next door. No answer. I immediately called 911, and I was talking to them I noticed my grandparents' car pulling out of the driveway. Dashing outside in my underpants (and stepping on a few cube-shaped shards of glass) to grab their attention I was like "grandma grandma my house was robbed!" and my grandparents, not realizing there was something wrong, were like "that's nice, see you later, bye!"
My mom comes home from work like right then, sick herself, and I'm finally telling the operator "oh here's my mom" and just thrusts the phone into mom's hands.
My grandparents realized there was something wrong so they came back too, and mom wasn't thrilled to see what had happened to her house. Cops showed up, I put some pants on, all sorts of crazy shit. Detective looked in my room (aka disaster area) and said "this room's been ransacked too," regular cop says "no it wasn't."

I look towards the living, and it's pitch black. I am likely to be eaten by a grue.

Glad you're okay.
I have a friend who takes his family's security
very seriously. He keeps a shotgun under his bed at all times and will not hesitate to aim for the kneecaps in the event the perp doesn't leave after a warning.
For this reason, no one ever pranks him at night if he's home. :p
Dethtoll, wow. Glad that you and your family are okay, at least.
I had to break into my grandmother's house once. She lived in a trailer park in Florida, and while she was up in Pennsylvania visiting relatives, she left us a key to the trailer so we could vacation down there for a little while. Well, we arrived well after midnight (1 or 2, I think it was), having driven straight from Indiana. Then we discovered that my grandmother had given us the wrong key. We knew the neighbors but didn't want to wake anyone since they were all quite elderly and we didn't even know if any of them would have a key or not. Finally, we made our way around to one of the kitchen windows and after much effort, succeeded in sliding an unlocked window open a little. I was much younger then, probably around ten or so, and as I was the lightest and skinniest, I was lifted up through the opening. I unlocked the door, we enjoyed our vacation, and never breathed a word of the incident to my grandmother.
We did, however, remind her to lock her windows. :p

When I was still living in South Africa I had a couple experiences of break-ins and attempted break-ins. Being quite paranoid, I often couldn't sleep and would occasionally walk to my bedroom window and peek outside just to make sure everything was okay (usually a couple times a night). On one occasion I opened the curtains to see a burglar creeping towards the window about 2 metres away. He ran like the wind when I banged my fists against the window.
Another time, my dad was going to get a midnight snack and interrupted some thieves inside the house. They had patiently sat outside one of the large windows peeling away the putty that held the window paine in place until they could quietly remove it and carry away a hi-fi system. The scariest part was that they'd been walking around the house while we were sleeping.
Once we got a security gate and german shepherd we didn't have any further problems. I count ourselves very fortunate though, every South African knows at least one family who's had a much, much worse experience. One of the reasons I left.:(

pffft so we all live with a nagging voice of fear over here, I bet you can't get decent boerewors where you are.

Not a chance, and I sorely miss the biltong! :(
Don't get me wrong, despite the crime SA is one of the most incredible places in the world and I visit regularly, still have family there. Might go back permanently some day, but hey, I'm still young and want to see the world!

Hey, neat. I thought Shayde and I were the only Saffers on TTLG.

Where do you live Caped? Cuz there is a nice SA shop in Richmond, London I can direct you to where you can get just about everything.
Yes, even Chappies.
We were very lucky in Africa. Never had a problem but know plenty of people who had some serious break-ins. Tied up and hostage type things even.
