I have an airsoft (
http://www.ad1-airsoft.com/product_info.php?products_id=58) Heckler & Koch G36K replica just for this kind of circumstances.* The lil' bastard is really painful. :sly:
Sometimes I wonder about what a burglar would think finding my "armoury" though. (On top of the SMG, I also have a Beretta M92 and a SWAT-style Sig P226 with light/laser sight, and they're near perfect replicas. We don't have to have tip painted red like the US, they pretty much look like the real thing.) Haha.
Seriously though, glad you're ok and nothing got stolen.
*OK, I wouldn't actually use them as it's illegal, but it's fun to imagine.

Pity you can't own a sword here. Back home you can have one in your house (iirc), you're just not allowed to carry blades on your person outside. If, God forbid, it comes down to a situation where you actually have to defend yourself, it's probably the best weapon to have short of a firearm.
If you're legally okay to kill an intruder then perhaps it is. If you have a sword then you should expect to stab someone. Not everyone who is willing to break into your house will run away at the first sign of danger.
A hefty tin of beans would probably hold up better in court.

I keep a similar model to (
http://www.mossberg.com/products/default.asp?id=5) this under my couch. I have something else in the bedroom, but I am not sure if I want to tell on myself, as its legality is highly suspect.
That said, after the other night I don't know what I want to do. I have done an almost 180 degree change of heart on my being armed. On the one hand, I am highly trained with every weapon I own. I would lay down and die for the security of my family. So, I am someone that can responsibly own and use a firearm. That said, I am shaken and don't know what the hell to think anymore. I would have a hard time taking a life, or even coming close, no matter if they were trying to rob me or not. I don't know if I could live with myself knowing I killed someone. It would at the very least haunt the shit out of me. I am going to hope the warning shot is enough, and I pray I never have to use that.
Back on topic, ostriig, you are lucky. Nothing was stolen and everyone remains unhurt. Use this as an excuse to prevent it from happening again, through common sense and better home security, instead of arming yourself with bigger and bigger weapons. I would hate to see a worst-case-scenario happen to you.

Neb - Yeah, but I don't know how well the tin would hold up against an attack. But that's just the law, screwy like that.

Since her flight got delayed I didn't get back till about 2hrs later; fortunately the back door opens out onto an enclosed car park so there's not much chance of random people walking past.
Well, you know my place, my bathroom window isn't around high traffic either. Lesson learned, though.
On the bright side, this thread is now teaching me about hurley sticks, bokkens and that gun-looking guns in Barcelona
may be less gun than they appear. And that Matthew may be half-naked
right now. Much obliged, fellas! :D
Edit:Gunsmoke - Yeah, agreed, avoidance is best. Like I said, we've changed the window policy and I spoke to my landlord earlier today about getting a better security lights setup.

I keep a vintage, if a bit time-worn, Louisville Slugger on hand at all times, and have done so since a couple incidents some years ago. One night on Halloween (I think it may have been 2005 or 2006, I don't remember exactly) the cops were chasing some dude who ran through a bunch of backyards; I had left the storm doors open (we don't have a back door) and the guy took shelter in our cellar. He didn't come upstairs- I'd locked the door and my dog was going berserk, so I guess he was afraid to come upstairs, and eventually he left when he thought the coast was clear.
The second incident was a little more recent, some drunk guy tried to force his way into our house because he was convinced it was his. The cops were less than sympathetic to us, insisting "he's simple!" like that somehow makes it okay to not throw him into the drunk tank for the night.
Ever since then, baseball bat.

Good point.
Forgot to add: during the 'incident' I had also left pretty much every light on in the flat. Annoyed the shit out of me at the time, but I guess in retrospect that was a good thing; might be (one of) the reasons why nothing further happened in my case.

Could well be. I had a similar experience a few years ago in rented accomodation where some kids were trying to break into the house where I was staying at the time. Turning on the lights was enough to scare them off - I suspect that once they realised that there was an unknown person actually present they were unwilling to risk it further. (Suited me too - I was freaked out enough as it was).

Apparently you got lucky the perpetrator didn't have a gun, wasn't high on drugs and dangerous, and who knows what maybe even insane and a big bad ass ex con trying to ass rape anything that crosses his path.
