^Take a good look at your own signature.
If there's one thing I learned about myself this year it is that there is a good chance that I might enjoy a game as long as I approach it with the right attitude. If I had played DX:IW earlier, I would have gone in expecting a complete disaster (due to reliance on others' opinions about the game), and that is exactly what it would have been. I would have been too busy looking at the flaws and comparing it to what it's not, rather than taking it on its own terms. I'm pretty sure this is what happened to those fans of the first game who absolutely hate the sequel. There's a life lesson in this too that extends outside the realm of gaming.
I agree. IW isn't a bad game. In fact better than most.
But lets put it this way. If there had never been an original DE, and all of a sudden IW came out, obviously minus the DE backstory, but basically same game mechanics, time period etc, I think most people,
even here would have thought it was a flawed gem.
Of course no one will ever admit this. Especially here at TTLG.
Same with Bioshock. Take away the spiritual successor to SS2 hype the game garnered, and again, we have a game most people here would have really liked.

Yes, because changing the name would mean no one would ever compare these games to other games. Like Deus Ex or System Shock 2.

I think it's not a good game. Taking the DE backstory out will just make it even less interesting and still not good game.

IW is flawed, no argument there, and
not as good as DE. However you have to keep in mind that it was one of the first games released simultaneously on both the Xbox and PC, hence the small maps. The graphics were actually pretty good for the times, despite the buggy eyed look of the NPC's and rather awful physics.
But I disagree about taking the backstory out making it a lesser game. You could keep the same basic theme, omit the DE characters completely, and still have an intriguing story.
We as gamers don't get enough FPS/RPG's and I personally don't understand the slamming it got. The gameplay is non-linear, it has multiple endings, and replaying the game actually
does make a difference in how you approach the challenges the game throws at you.

I don't think I qualify as a "gamer", but I agree FPS/RPG are rare and I don't regret playing IW. Having said that, the storytelling was mostly emotionless and, more importantly, the game was far too easy. When you talk about "the challenges the game throws at you", I wonder what you are talking about.

Not exactly, considering the difference between a spiritual successor and a sequel (not that it's true for either, but even less so with a sequel).
The whole argument of "If DX had never been made" is so academic as to be futile. It was made, and from that came the sequel, terrible though it was.
It's like saying the Star Wars prequels would've been so much better if Lucas hadn't made the originals: For one, it's all but impossible (what with this pesky cause and effect) but more importantly, it's just not true.
If you played IW first and liked it, that I can understand, even though I didn't enjoy it much, but that in no way means it's any better for it (to me it's both a bad sequel and a bad game, but that's just how I feel about it).

So. I should accept that they sold bad PC game to me because it wasn't made to be good but to be multiplatform. Seems like I am not so forgiving or altruistic :weird:

I actually played the original first. Playing it again right now as a matter of fact. And there's no doubt that it's the superior game. Never said it wasn't.
What I
am saying is that despite it being inferior, it's still better than the majority of games I've played. I agree character development was pretty much non-existent, it is to easy, blocky environment's, etc etc, but it at least makes an attempt to be a
somewhat intelligent game which is more than you can say for most.
Lets put it this way. I've played IW 3 times, and HL2 once. HL2 is considered one of the best games made in the last 10 years or so and as a pure shooter, it
is the better game, however that's all you do in it. The general consensus of IW is that it's a mediocre game at best. So we've got 2 games. One considered a classic already, and another, forgettable by most.
Personally, I'd rather play a game that gives me some choice in how I play my character. Even though it doesn't really make a difference in the story, at least IW gives me an option to try different gameplay styles, whereas a game like HL2, or any straight shooter for that matter, gives you the option to kill and blow stuff up.
Of course, one man's junk is another mans gold.

"I just saw one of your buddies get killed!"
"Eh, it happens. Move along."
"Hi! Can I play with your prototype top-secret weapon?"
"Sure, why not!"
I don't care what you're comparing it to-- IW has some of the hands-down dumbest writing I've ever seen in a video game.

Some of it kinda works if seen as a self-aware parody. For instance, I thought it was quite witty how the coffee franchises mirrored the overall conspiracy.
Problem is, this sort of parody doesn't exactly make the overall fiction more credible.
