So... Deus Ex: Human Revolution got leaked to P2P networks - by system shocker

It has switching between covers, yes.

After reading all the bits of tantalising info, I couldn't resist anymore and decided to DL the leaked beta.
I was snooping around in the Police Station's Armory (after slumberlanding the guard, of course), when I heard snatches of music that was recognised as DX1's UNATCO Theme ...
... and I resisted poking my head out of the window (it was ~ 2 am) and screaming "That's it! I'm pre-ordering!"
Very tempted to plead for a fellow TTLGer to pre-order the Collector's edition on my behalf as Singapore does not have a physical copy pre-order option - otherwise I'm reduced to pre-ordering via Steam.
Hacking: After the tutorial mission (where hacking was child's play due to 30 second tracing time), hacking all but the easiest locks is dicey without upgrades. Once I realised it, reloaded back to the Zeke confrontation and start putting all my initial upgrade points into hacking related fields. Nearly got kicked out of a level 4 hack (alarm was ~ 5 seconds).
3rd-Person Cover - A little awkward at first, but I got used to it. My biggest quibble is that if you move back slightly when you exit cover, and in certain situation with low cover, just that one step back can BREAK cover (e.g. if you are hiding behind a waist-height table with a hostile right on the other side). Since you can detect hostiles (along with their facing direction) on the radar, the peekaround is not critical.
Anyone going to start on plot speculations for DXHR? (another thread marked I'm starting to wonder about Adam's relation to DX1 beyond merely investigating the event leading to his augmentation.

Question to those that have played the leak: is the third person mechanic something that could plausibly be removed by modders? I'm sure it has its place, I'm sure the game was designed to have it used, but...I just would really love not having the game force it on me.

That really depends on what tools are available, I think?
The problem with that idea is that many functions and animations are set up to use it. Removing the third person mechanic would remove the ability to use the cover system, among other things. Even using ladders is done in third person. Given the right tools, yeah, it could probably be doable, but it would be a pain.

Easy, no need for modders, just don't press that buton to go into cover. Plays just fine without that.
OK, you can't lean to see whats behind corner, but I guess it would be easier to implement leaning than to modify cover system.

Funny, that was Eidos Montreal's answer as well. Sure it plays fine without it, but that's not a good solution if you ask me. They should have supported leaning.

Yeah, I read about the guy who just unbound the cover and takedown key and I'll probably go with that, but the ladder thing sounds weird, and well... I'll probably be able to live with it but still, come on Eidos. Come on.

But can we use stealth without using the third person view? Are there shadows (or something similar) where we can hide and observe in order to plan our approach?
Rolander on 30/6/2011 at 08:56
The ability to peek around/over cover is a significant advantage to the 3rd-person cover mode. I'm afraid I never tried testing hiding in shadows (after all, this isn't Thief) and focused on keeping out of sight when stealthing (or use the Cloak aug to pop out briefly).
Without using 3rd-person cover, a player can still detect enemies and the direction they are facing via the radar (limited range of 25m, upgradable to 50m). However, as the saying goes "A picture paints a thousand words", the view via the 3rd-person cover is still vastly superior.

Nope, that's the thing. The game is built around "wallhacking" in TPP.
