In most european countries, Ireland in particular, we get taxed on petrol, very highly in fact. I work part time in a "gas" station as Americans know them, and its kind of common knowledge over here that retailers make very little money out of petrol/diesel sales. Thats why in the past 10 years or so all filling stations have convenience stores, otherwise they'll make no money, the government gets most of the price on the pumps.
