So about these gas prices... (American at least) - by io organic industrialism

save it for another day, I'm not going to detail my current position on global warming for you. 'Current', because unless you're a close-minded geezer or don't pay attention to current events, it's quite the dynamic dilemma these days (especially considering the automotive bailout talks)
Thats as far as I'm going in this thread
If you don't pay attention to what's going on in the world, well then there really is no reason to change your mind, is there Bear? you can just continue arguing the same shit turning a blind eye to reality.

I feel kinda bad now that I have sort of the same attitude as IO: I can't possibly spend the time necessary to truly understand what's going on, so I focus on things that are immediately important, like an upcoming exam or the reasons why Mirror's Edge is cool
Well, I find there's room in my brain for both Fallout 3 and current events, but that could just be me.
Having said that, I don't really have a problem with people who tune out news other than that which immediately affects them. Some people just aren't interested in being plugged in to the world, and that's a valid choice.
Gloat about your ignorance online, however, and we've got a problem.

We agree on that at least. My opinions don't change as drastically anymore since most of the things I was majorly ignorant about I've learned at least enough about to not be a complete dipshit, or at least I know how little I know and I keep my mouth shut. On global warming however, my opinion hasn't changed much since it was pretty well proven for a good while. I would hear perfectly reasonable sounding evidence against global warming, and after seeing the majority of the "evidence" against it get thoroughly picked apart, I made my opinion. Nevermind that people who disagreed with it tended to be people who seemed to want to be on the other side just to be rebels, and made a point of being condescending snobs about it (which is very unscientific).
My only problem was that my last impression of you was a slight skeptic at best, and now you are talking down to someone over it, which doesn't seem quite right. I'm glad to know you aren't as set in your thoughts as I thought you were, nothing wrong with it and I wasn't insulting you for it, but being condescending about it after changing your mind yourself isn't really cool. That was the whole jist of my post, so don't bother replying unless you disagree with that specifically because the last thing we need is a global warming debate.

It's just that no matter what I do, I never feel informed enough to actually engage in any meaningful discussion. Newspaper articles only give you the most cursory info, and when I try to read more the more heady stuff I find that it generally assumes a prior knowledge I just don't have (can't even follow the daily show because of this). I need an entry point, but I have no idea where to look for one.

I honestly gave up caring about most current affairs issues about 3 years ago when I realised that governments are only truly democratic on election day, plus it takes a massive amount of energy and effort to stay abreast of new developments, and the Illuminati run everything anyway.

The problem is people who make no attempt to be informed on most subjects, particularly national and international issues, tend to have an opinion on all of them that they are fairly protective of, but the biggest problem is this: they vote on them.
I know I'm not wrong or right about everything, but I do make an attempt to understand things as best I can, because understanding things means more to me than just being able to be competent in a conversation or argument. I'm not that great in arguments because they are by nature so chaotic that its pretty hard to keep things on track. Unless you walk around with big packets of information on any possible situation, its hard to say definitively "You are fucking wrong, here is the information on why". I've actually considered doing that because so many of my family members are conservative Christian types. Not to be a dick, but when you can't present the proof right then and there its too subjective and they can disagree. It is especially annoying when arguing with hardcore ideologues (who are probably hopeless anyways). I know there is no way to be totally unbiased, but like so many things its something to always strive for.
Thats why for some people it is frustrating to see people make no effort to gather any more information than that which wanders across their field of vision. That said, I can see how someone with family obligations has more to worry about. I'm busy enough but I don't have people really depending on me so I can indulge myself (because its a pretty self-satisfying thing a lot of times). We don't like to admit it but a lot of us stay abreast of certain happenings simply to show other people that we do.
