I've been trying to do a bit of sneaking recently and have run into a problem.
When I sneak I always get caught. Every single time.
I have the sneak icon up on screen, I am poised to snatch the item/unlock the door. I always get "your crime has been reported". What gives ?!
Even with a potion of invisibility I am always busted. Is this a bug or is it just my poor sneak ability ?

It's poor sneak ability. Plus I think the direction the people are facing and how far away they are matters too. Invisibility definitely will give you an advantage. I also always keep a chameleon ring with me so I can steal books and things out of chests. Remember, you are no longer invisible once you touch something. But with you chameleon ring on you still have a better chance of staying in SNEAK MODE as you rifle thru someone stuff. I hope this helps.... :D

Only one way to go... Chameleon!!!
As a theif you should have a good illusion and alteration skill! Actually you wouldn't really need sneak nor security!
I've enchanted my gear with a 32% Chameleon - and combined with a sneak skill below 50 I can sneak out of combat with dremora lords and golden saints...
Plus having constant chameleon reduces the risk of getting hit in combat - significantly!

Invisibility potions stop once you perform an action. So, when you try to steal, you become visible again and have to rely on your sneak skill only.
The chameleon spell effect stays active for the entire duration.

I'm just saying it's not a neccesary thing at any point in the game.

All things unnecesary =)

Tuco, why don't you keep your narrowminded opinions to yourself.
Better still realise that you ARE narrowminded and that other methods are equally as valid.
THAT'S WHY THEY'RE IN THE GAME!! It's not called a ROLE Playing Game for nothing. You are supposed to choose your own path.
Don't get me wrong, I respect your choice of Battlemage. I'd even be interested to try it out myself.
But the whole point of a game like Morrowind is it's freedom to choose. Accept it.
