In other words, if all you can contribute to a thread is a smiling face icon, you shouldn't be responding at all. These people are likely just trying to increase their post counts anyway.
Seriously, I personally think that posting replies consisting solely of smileys can be annoying as much as it can be appropriate. Say, if you are a poster who does it all the time you are most proly to be banned by forum admins. Still, if you provide rich content to most of your replies and allow only some of them to be plain smileys from time to time, this shouldn't be considered a reason for others to be mad.
Also, there is enough of silly threads where smileys only add to the 'atmosphere'...
