I can relate.
Insomnia has so far stolen about ten years of my life, the last six-or-so have been particularly tough, and still getting worse.
We should form an insomnia support group. (Serious about it, too, if you're interested.) I feel like I'm in the exact same boat as you, just a few years behind.

But one bit of advice, TNT:
go easy on the alcohol. Sure, it makes things feel better for a while, and may even help you sleep if used modestly, but drink too much and you'll most definitely screw up your sleep even more.
Oh, don't worry, I know this, I wouldn't do anything stupid. Basically, if I think brandy might wind me down, I drink it. (Hey, it's five o'clock somewhere.) I basically use it as a sedative if I'm stressed out. It was amusing watching the types of liquor I was drinking progress from a cooler to a flask of whiskey that was gone in one night when I was stressed about the clinic. (My flask is my one true love. Just drank a cooler and a flask of brandy, w00t! am I feeling real good now. :D)

And
also, and
trust me on this, it makes it
very likely you'll post something on the internet you later really wish you hadn't.
Like this thread? I was very embarrased when I saw it, but at least it got interesting!

Umm... how long is an abnormaly long time to fall asleep?
They say 20 minutes. I say they lie!

TNT,Gray: what was the point that made you visit a doctor?
When I started missing quite a bit of school, I guess. When I went to my doctor for help I basically just let them push pills until one of them left me in a corner crying, and I refused to do that anymore.

Typically, I take a sleeping pill (Zopiclon, for falling asleep)
What kind of a junkie are you?! It's Zopiclone. :D (Ah, the irony, we're on the same meds. What doseage, if you don't me asking? I'm taking 3 of them.)

And, apologies to TNT for hijacking your thread.
Oh, hey, I don't care, at least the thread came to some use. And besides, I've hijacked plenty in my day. :D
Anyways, in case anyone cares, here's my write-up on the appointment.
Firstly, I'm almost in shock, the doctor had a Canadian accent
and he wasn't an ignorant asshole. He actually took notes when I was talking, and wasn't treating me like a lazy prick! :D
Second, the test actually was of some use. I barely noticed all the stuff strapped to me, (except for the thing strapped around my chest that half smothered me when I was lying on my back) and I did get some sleep, after I laid on my back for an hour and a half, got mad, disobeyed orders, rolled over, and dropped off within 8 minutes. :p
Anyway, the readings did pick up a short circuit. When I'm in deep sleep, when my brain should only be outputing delta waves, but alpha waves, which should only happen when I'm waking up, are happening all throughout, so it's interrupting my deep sleep, which I have less of than normal. They don't know what's causing it, but he said I likely had chronic fatigue syndrome on top of everything.
The shopping I did was even better, because we never really figured out what was wrong with me. Anyways, I got some live plants for my aquarium, (and had a scare with a fish I thoght was dying, but had in reality just cranked out some more babies!) and better yet, a 19 inch widescreen monitor. (My mom wanted her 17 inch LCD back, so she bought the new one to keep me happy. And good god am I happy.)
Anyways, yeah, I'm drunk again, I think I'll admire my freshly planted plants and go to bed in a bit . . .

20 minutes or more sounds perfectly normal to me, and I'm fairly sure I don't have any sleep problems.
TheNightTerror on 27/1/2007 at 10:17
That's precisely why I ignore the advice to get up and do something after 20 minutes of no sleep. :p
Fingernail on 27/1/2007 at 10:31
Yeah that is bullshit, it varies for me, but for instance last night I must've spent about an hour laying awake.

19 inch widescreen monitor.

We are already in one, right here. But, apart from most support groups, there's also potential for other people to point and laugh, which is one of the perks of TTLG :)

That's all fine and well, as long as you're aware of the inherent risk of overdoing it, getting fall-on-your-face drunk, which will most certainly screw up your sleep for several nights. I have occasionally made this mistake, so I try to be more careful now of how much I consume. There's also the risk of alcoholism, of course, but I'm sure you're aware of that too, and I have no intention of lecturing you on that.

No, not like this thread - this thread could have gone horribly wrong, had you been more drunk, but I don't think it has. I have posted rather many whiny rants about insomnia, and some of those while drunk, and the drunker, the whinier and afterwards more embarrassing. I'm just saying that drunken whiny rants always has potential for disaster.

My box says "Zopiclon", but I live in a non-English country, so I assume that's the word we use here for the same chemical.
I'm currently on a rather small dose, only 5mg each night, since taking stronger doses tend to give me too bothersome side effects. After years and years of experience with different pills I'm now down to 5mg Zopiclon and 0.25ml of Alimemazin (40mg/ml), in a delicate balance of symptoms and side effects. I plan to eventually reduce these doses even further, if I can, with the help of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and physiotherapy (relaxation techniques).

chronic fatigue syndrome
This is a tricky one. It's more an umbrella of several similar symptoms, than a specific diagnosis with a known cure. If you haven't read up on it already, (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronic_Fatigue_Syndrome) WikiPedia has a few words about it. Of course, I haven't read the whole thing, since, well... for obvious reasons.

So what you're saying is that you're not an insomniac, you're an alcoholic
Gray on 27/1/2007 at 15:59
Of course you do, Noid.
