The level cap is at 50, I think. This means no more magic/health/stamina increases or perks. Abilities can still be increased.

No, it is 70 - but you must have all skills at 100 at that time. So, the number you should consider to be your reasonable cap is told to be indeed 50.
Hm, can one game the system with jail time (ie, get the perk-points again or does one just go into the negative with exp)?

You really need to go back and do this, with some nice fancy mods.
Morrowind really doesn't require too many. Sure, you can go nuts with mods for it, but the experience I had playing Morrowind the first time, without any mods, is about as good as the experience I've had playing it loaded to the gills with them. Better to play it 'vanilla' for a bit to determine what's 'broken' and what's best left alone, then seek out those mods which only fix those specific issues.

The animations are ok, if nothing to write home about (especially if you've just played Rage).
Yeah, coming off Rage, Skyrim is a bit frustrating. I've now gotten accustomed to the idea of characters actually doing things with their body when they talk as opposed to just pretending they're encased in a block of ice, and in Skyrim, that's not what happens.

I believe I read somewhere that the only thing you lose, skillwise, when you go to jail is all current progress toward the next skill level. So if you were 85% toward skilling up in One Handed, for example, it would just reset that progress to zero. So no actual loss of levels would occur.
I can't confirm this though, as I haven't actually spent any time in jail yet. ;)

Funny, I had the exact opposite reaction -- and made gamestop take the blasted buggy pile back.
Whoever designed the menu and inventory system near as I can tell has NEVER played a computer game with mouse and keyboard... in general any elements that would make me think "Elder Scrolls" or why I actually LIKE ALL the previous versions, are just plain missing/incomplete and on the whole it just feels like "yet another crappy console port".
I've not been this disappointed and unimpressed with a game release since Deadly Shadows... and at least that had the excuse of changing hands more often than Pam Anderson's Hepatitis-C over it's development cycle and being rushed out the door last minute.

I don't think you can join
every faction available, for example there's the major plot point of this "guerilla resistance" against the empire, which I think once you join a side, the other will be off-limits (note, I haven't joined either yet myself so might be wrong). However, I think you are able to join lots of guilds as in being the dark brotherhood, the thieves guild and "warriors" guild.
I am not sure, if there is a level cap, but if not, then you should be able to get every single perk and max all skills. Note that this would take quite huge amount of time, thus a normal player or even a slightly obsessive one has accomplished most there is to do in the world by then. It has seemed to work ok by now, I have not paid any attention to leveling my skills, it has just happened as I've been questing and wandering (which to me means that their exp system is working quite well - you just
do stuff, fun stuff, instead of obsessively training or grinding) and it's been fairly challenging at times. Now that I've started racking in some better gear, it's starting to get a bit easier, so I might need to notch the difficulty up to the highest level, but the enemies are still very hazardous, especially spellcasters or crazy two-hander mofos.
I see, ok, that sounds good enough. I like having to make choices in the game. If everything is eventually available then I lose interest. I like to to replay and see what I could have done differently.
Deathshadow, I see what you mean. Got the game, began playing and couldn't believe how buggy and uncomfortable it is. I must have spent almost 3 hours tweaking it. It's still pretty crappy for a PC game but the actual gameplay is interesting and I'm getting used to the horrendous UI.
The way I see it all the issues will be moded or patched by the devs themselves. It seems to have a very strong core: gameplay. Everything else can be adjusted and I can get used to.

Lol'd. I think a couple of those characters are now in orbit.

They are working on a patch right now so....
------------
But other than some buggy stuff, while not perfect, I am enjoying the game quite a bit.
Funny, I really liked Morrowind, and while a bit ugly by today's standards and the awful level up system (getting your but kicked by a large cockroach at the start) it was a really fun engrossing game. (I finished the main quest and tons of others stuff)
Oblivion was beautiful, but for some reason it just didn't pull me in. I played it quite a bit, but never really even got into the main quest much and never finished the game.
Skyrim is pulling me in a lot more for sure. I'm not reading books but I am digging the dialog...
The one thing that could used tweaked though is the dragons. Cave bears, Giant Centipedes and Saber Cats are really tough battles. They usually win. I feel like I need to prepare to fight them.
Dragons should scare the crap out of you, but when I see one I rush in with no preparation and kick it's but. I want an epic battle!

Well,
you are dragon born. Not cave bear born, or giant centipedes born :joke:
