Yeh with the graphics extender mod Morrowind can still look pretty good.

no lore (the world isn't fleshed out enough) or real consequences of your actions/decision to the world around you. [...] I know nothing of the previous Scroll games so I'm afraid I'll be missing on story elements, ...
Bethesda has created a very rich universe, of which you can find references and descriptions via ruins, a vast amount of in-game books (which get more with each game) or simply talking with people. It depends on how you want to approach this. While playing, you can perfectly ignore all the backstory/universe elements and treat a dungeon like any other.
I for example always glee in excitement when discovering a Dwemer ruin.
What I mean is, you don't have to know any backstory or previous games - it helps for the richness and to 'get' one ore two side comments - but if you're interested, there's plenty of resources to catch up.
I have never tried but would assume that you can indeed break the main story line by killing a (future) important character.
People do react on what you did (at least cosmetically) and only certain actions can trigger new (epic) story lines.
Example for cosmetically: I've managed to receive an artifact from a goddess, which has random people call me out in amazement
Example for enabling: Apparently, you have to 'retrieve' a certain item and talk to the right person to gain access to the Thieves Guild

Has nothing to do with the graphics. The starting run speed is as fast as most games' crouch walking speed for one. I'd give Digi about 30 minutes before he gets mad at that alone.

This Morrowind wank is getting annoying. Sure, the game world was really interesting (with awesomely wierd stuff like siltstriders) and fun to explore, but oh boy was it fucking annoying to actually play, especially in the start. The combat, instantly depleting stamina bars and constant missing. If Oblivion wouldn't have been so shit, people wouldn't rave so much about Morrowind all the time.

Morrowind was fun at the time, certainly, and had a fantastic sense of exploration, but CLIFF RACERS.
That and the combat really was poor as there was a massive disconnect between on-screen actions and results determined by background dice-rolls.
Also, I don't know how modern machines handle it, but the "Cells" that made up the overworld map became quicker to traverse as your character got more experienced, resulting in an increasing frequency of minor freezes as the game loaded the next cell. I'm guessing this is probably a lot less noticeable on modern hardware, but still, it was incredibly irritating at the time.
It could be very hard going back to Morrowind, even with a bevy of mods in hand to improve the experience.
I'm getting increasingly tempted by Skyrim, but I keep remembering that Oblivion seemed okay at first, then left me with an incredibly nasty taste in my mouth. I also found it appalling how Bethesda blatantly bought the press resulting in no-one really calling them out on the game's problems apart from the community.
I'm guessing that your actions don't change the world in Skyrim with quests still existing as essentially separate entities, hermetically sealed. I've also noticed that for all their claims that this is a new engine, it's essentially a lie and just an upgraded Gamebryo.
Bethesda's kudos with me is at an all-time low, and there are other games keeping me distracted at the moment, so I'm going to give it a couple of months then pick it up in a sale, if I pick it up at all.

haha these are exactly the reasons I love it so much

Hahaha, I felt that pain too.

animations and cutscenes are typical Bethesda quality(bad), you don't need to eat, you don't need to sleep, time's silly(What is it, 12x speed?), interface is already legendary
The animations are ok, if nothing to write home about (especially if you've just played Rage). Eating is boring. Sleeping is even more boring. It's not a simulator. Should we be digging a hole every so often and burying turds? No. The rate at which time passed can be changed with a quick config tweak. Although at first I struggled with the interface, it's not as bad as I feared and it's growing on me.
Particularly liked how I had to solve a puzzle by actually examining something in my inventory.. Can't comment on the treasure/level scaling yet.
Overall, it's the best thing since Morrowind. Oblivion was always a massive stodgy turd populated with twitching pasty-faced corpses to my eye and Skyrim makes my heart sing as Morrowind did. Which is all I ask of a game, even if it's a little rough around the edges.
And as of yet, I haven't spied a single bloody cliff racer :D

Well duh, Jiub killed them all. And became a saint. In Skyrim it's wolves wolves everywhere.

Aha, ok! So it's more like the Stalker games in that sense, big world to explore (well, not compared to Skyrim), factions to do missions for which react to your decisions in a cosmetic way, interesting missions and loot to find if you talk to the right person or visit the secret area, sounds like I'll enjoy it afterall!
One more thing, can you join every faction without consequences? For instance, can I be a thief and a city guard or something at the same time? Also, by the end of the game, are you able to master everything in terms of perks and skills or must you be selective in your character upgrades?
Thank you!

I don't think you can join
every faction available, for example there's the major plot point of this "guerilla resistance" against the empire, which I think once you join a side, the other will be off-limits (note, I haven't joined either yet myself so might be wrong). However, I think you are able to join lots of guilds as in being the dark brotherhood, the thieves guild and "warriors" guild.
I am not sure, if there is a level cap, but if not, then you should be able to get every single perk and max all skills. Note that this would take quite huge amount of time, thus a normal player or even a slightly obsessive one has accomplished most there is to do in the world by then. It has seemed to work ok by now, I have not paid any attention to leveling my skills, it has just happened as I've been questing and wandering (which to me means that their exp system is working quite well - you just
do stuff, fun stuff, instead of obsessively training or grinding) and it's been fairly challenging at times. Now that I've started racking in some better gear, it's starting to get a bit easier, so I might need to notch the difficulty up to the highest level, but the enemies are still very hazardous, especially spellcasters or crazy two-hander mofos.
