I've always been partial to the mandolin, myself.

I've tried to play mandolin, but my fingers are just too big for it. Heck, Stratocaster necks are a little too narrow for me. I like the way mandolins sound though. Seals and Crofts "Summer Breeze" comes to mind. What sounds like a distorted guitar is really a mandolin. You probably already knew that though.

If you're interested in fusion sitaring/someone who can play that thing like a motherfucking
axe rock star, try tracking down Asad Khan's stuff. You're likely to have heard him playing in Slumdog Millionaire, if you need a touchpoint.
Sulphur, that guy seriously kicks MF ass! I like the fusion. Classical Indian music is great, but this stuff rocks. Thanks.

You have to shift gears in your mind to get the hang of it - a raga can last for over an hour as they shift through all the rhythms and tempos.
Ah yes, Carnatic music. L. Subramanium with Jean-Luc Ponty and Billy Cobham:

Just stumbled across an old favorite. Probably too mainstream pop-like for you hardcore sitar fans.
But I'm just a shallow westerner who doesn't mind that Guzheng is also easy on the eye.

Koyla, thanks for the addition. And thanks to everyone else too. Non-western instruments are very cool, no matter if they are used to play western style music, or traditional styles from their home regions. I'm now a bit partial to "hang drums".
