A good hardcore band that has everything an old-school hardcore band should but isn't strictly ugly+angry music for ugly+angry people but has a sense of humor and fun is the Slumlords. While not strictly hardcore (they're all over the place) another good underground punk band is Nomeansno (which is basically the same people as the Hanson Brothers, NOT to be confused with the "Mmmbop" kids, but acting smarter). I'd recommend them to anyone, even those who aren't fond of punk. Just plain great music, although plenty weird.
