Fuck Sioux Falls. There was a show tonight, with a couple hardcore bands from Colorado (Rebuild and Rally the Fray). There was about 50-60 people there. But after the locals, fucking everyone left. It was just me, and 6 other people (besides the band) who were there when Rebuild and Rally the Fray played. No one in any of the local bands even fucking stayed (and there were 3)! Fuck Sioux Falls, piece of shit town, fucking piece of shit people, fucking piece of shit music scene.

If I went to a show that I was eager to see and it ended up being just me and six other people, I'd be really fucking pleased. How often does that happen? Shit, at that point you collar the bass player and ask if you can jam with them.
PigLick on 14/10/2006 at 06:08
It happens quite often, really. And man, I used to hate when people would ask to jam, as kenny loggins once said "fly away to, the danger zone". That is what you are entering when you let strangers up on stage to jam with the band.

Has Kenny Loggins been trying to jam with you, too?
I swear, I can't keep that guy out of my basement.

There was a local ska band from the Hudson Valley that I knew and loved during the 90's (Perfect Thyroid) who had a huge following in the area. All of their local shows were (and their reunion shows still are) big events. They'd regularly sell out 600 to 1000 seat venues, headlined festivals playing to a few thousand, and were put on the bill for a big pre-show at Woodstock '94.
When they toured outside of the HV, it was a different story, and it took them years to build up an audience. And I remember seeing them at my college dive bar twice in '93 with under a dozen people there (by the time I graduated they were packing the place) and the same thing in NYC in '98 or so. Have to say, those were three of the more fun shows I'd seen, if only because they had fun with it, regardless: Playing all sorts of oddball requests and switching instruments.
How the band handles shit like that totally determines how good a show it can be. They shouldn't take it personally, and definitely not take it out on the people who actually ARE there.

That happens all the time here. An average show gets 30 people around. Sioux Falls sucks for music, lazy people who'ld rather get drunk then go to shows.

I always had the opposite problem. We'd go to Beale St. in Memphis or Deep Elum in Dallas and bring in 200 people without blinking. Play in our hometown (Little Rock at the time) and guaranteed no more than 10-15 people and some fucker usually stole stuff from our merch table. Pretty embarrasing in a way because you're telling people how you're just killing in other markets and then you can't get arrested at home.
I hate fucking Little Rock.
