I didn't see a thread yet, so I figured I'd start one. Though I'll try to avoid spoilers to begin with, through discussion I'm sure they'll emerge.
I saw the second showing of the day here and just got back not long ago. Now, I've played only the first Silent Hill all the way through, played a little of the beginning of SH2, and have played a few hours into SH3 (don't even own SH4). Given that background, and that the movie is mostly based off of SH1, I have to say, wow, I thought they really got the look and feel down perfectly.
The first half of the movie mimics much of the first part of SH1 very well, and it was really great to see things reinacted to great effect. The story starts to diverge from the game in the second half I believe, not a whole lot exactly, but in a way that is kind of parallel and the ending kind of makes the movie seem to trail off which is kind of strange.
Overall, I think it's a great adaptation, though I am kind of curious about the thoughts of some people who haven't played the games to have any idea of what's going on before hand. There are some parts of the movie's storyline I'm still not entirely sure about, so from the perspective of someone who hasn't even played any of the games, I have to wonder.
I'm also glad they went ahead and kept what was needed for an R rating as I think certain parts wouldn't have been as effective or possibly as believable without it. Though there were a couple of things I probably didn't need to see quite so graphically.
So, anyone else's thoughts on the movie? I imagine many who are going to see it won't see it until this evening, at least in the US, if they're going today.
[edit]Oh, and I almost forgot, I *loved* the use of the music throughout, I'm so glad they did have Akira Yamaoka available, it added a lot to the overall feel and atmosphere, though again, that might be because I'm familiar with the games as well.[/edit]

I take it, if SH4 is the only one I've played, I won't be dissapointed? I'm expecting creepy, ingenuitive horror/thriller. I don't want a crappy cookie cutter horror movie.

I'm planning to see it very soon, and I haven't played the games. Well, OK, I've played tiny bits of 1 and 2, loved the atmosphere... didn't like the gameplay at all, so I reluctantly stopped.
Sorry, Dranyth, I am an extreme spoilerphobe so I haven't even read your post thoroughly (I'm not saying there's spoilers in it, it's just that my eyes will refuse to settle on it until after I've seen the film) but as long as the movie recreates the atmosphere and visual creeps of the games without making me swing a big pipe in slow motion or rearrange furniture without knowing why, I think I may enjoy it. I have almost no experience of the games, certainly not enough to have any grasp of the stories; I'll post my thoughts when I've seen the film.

I would say it's definitely not cookie cutter, BlackErtai. I haven't played SH4, which I've heard is kind of different than the others but I'm sure it gives you an idea of the atmosphere and music, which should be good going in.
Hehe, I don't blame you piln, and when you get back from the movie, you can read my first post, I tried to do everything I could to not spoil anything but you could let me know after if you think I have.
Like I said, the atmosphere is what I think they've captured perfectly, especially in the first half of the movie. Yes, the games can be kind of, unwieldly to play, and it did take me quite a while to finally get around to finishing SH1, but I was glad I did.

Spoiler: Rotten Tomatoes gave it 20%. It's shit.
Long live the curse of video game adaptations.

The only really spooky thing about this is I was just going to post the same fucking thing Scots just did, spoiler'd comment about Rotten Tomatoes and all.

I thought it was great, but I get the feeling that anyone who sees it that hasn't played the games won't enjoy it that much.

i'll give it a 3/10
don't spend your time + money unless you enjoy watching bad acting, a poor plot, and a really really cheap use of CGI technology.
I honestly have no clue why the theatre was so packed other than thte fact that this was already a game:sweat:
edit: never played the game...never want to after this

I'm glad I judged these games based on their movies. No doubt they were has poor has the films that followed them.

alright sorry about that stereotyping, what I meant to say is I don't play these types of games anyways, they just don't really appeal to me.
