Well at least they're not turning Silent Hill into a top-down co-op shooter focused on combat.
Oh wait.

Releasing some easily ignorable, shovelware spin-off title is akin to the sacrilege of butchering the genuine classics of the series? Nigga please.
For what it's worth, Downpour sounds very promising, possibly a return to form for the series. Using a rain motif in a psychological horror title is an inspired idea.

I didn't say sacrilege, exactly, but still - nnnnnnohgod what were they thinking? Doesn't matter if it's shovelware - it's still Silent Hill. Shows how they care.

What's so bad about the silent hill pc ports? I read that the port of 3 was the best version of the game but that the port of 2 not so.
At least, the port of 2 seems to have hard shadows instead of soft which kind of ruin it - or is that simply a bug and therefore fixable?
Thing is, there even seems to be complaints over the xbox version - see last 2 posts here:

They say that the sequencing is off in the xbox version :S I guess they mean the exact moment when incidental sounds and music play but are they spouting crap or do they have a point.
Certainly from what i've seen at the start of the game on youtube (though no more as to not spoil it for myself), the xbox/pc seems to have higher res textures and a much better flashlight.
They also reckon the fog is better in the ps2, but i couldn't see the difference so don't know if they're making that up there either.
I can find some example videos if that would help.
Anyway about this remake - it's a shame, the new higher res (than even pc it seems) textures look nice and subtly done (if they are using higher res "masters" that weren't in game before then that would make good sense) but yes the new voice acting does seem rather forced and not really fitting.
I was about to laugh at all the fan rage concerning it but in all honesty it seems like they probably have a point. I mean, replacing the voice acting and doing a worse, more contrived job just because you can't be arsed to pay the original actors for old rereleases and this new hd version is a bit low.

My main issue with the PC ports, is that I'd have to track them down, like off Ebay or something. I already own all the best console versions of said games. If the PC versions were readily available on a digital distribution service, then I'd bite.
As for port quality, I was going off vaguely remembered anecdotes that I heard years ago. I'll fully concede that point to you.

The SH2 port has severe sound looping issues, as well as lighting issues on some setups (pitch black screen once you get the flashlight etc.) The lighting itself also seems a lot more flat in the PC version.

Also, any proposed patch for Silent Hill 2 is bullshit. It patches nothing, because it contains nothing. When I tried to use it and nothing changed, I unpacked the patch itself and found it empty. The entire filesize of the patch was of the patcher .exe. PC GAMING SUPPORT!

Eh, I think the new Maria (Mary Elizabeth McGlynn) sounded okay. I just hope she sings on the soundtrack for Downpour.
Coincidentally, I just started the PC port of SH2 again.
I played through it fine back in the day, but now I got the sound looping issue (fixed with an (
http://www.fileplanet.com/92543/0/0/0/1/section/Patches) official patch), and the cutscenes after the first Angela cutscene just seem to stop at the first frame. It seems you can fix this by using the task manager to set SH2's process affinity to one core.
Still a better port for its time than Homecoming, which manages to fuck up displaying the map on resolutions greater than 1280x720.
And regarding Book of Memories: (

I like Mary Elizabeth McGlynn. She's got a great voice.
However: there was nothing wrong with much of SH2's voice acting so LEAVE IT THE FUCK ALONE YOU FUCKING DOUCHEBAGS.
There's also the fact that those voices haven't been mixed in at the proper levels and are lacking the ambient sounds/music, so they're at odds with the cinematics simply because they sound exactly like someone recording in a small room in a studio behind a microphone.
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tysvNGGFN3M&feature=related) Some of those lines have been burned into my psyche - Mary/Maria's lines like, 'See? I'm real,' had absolutely perfect cadence and delivery, so the new voice acting just feels like I'm having all my nostalgia gouged out of my brain with a rusty ice pick.
Just fucking
stop. Leave the original voice acting alone for the love of god.
Also: to everyone playing the PC port, yeah, the lighting is flat and stark and awful in comparison to what you see on the PS2. Play the PS2 version alone; emulate it if you have to.
