Firefly versus Alien Resurrection. God dammit, dethtoll. How dare you even have the two in the same post? Ain't no fuckin' ballpark, it's not even the same
sport.:tsktsk:
Seriously.

Listen. Dethtoll. I generally respect you and your vitriolic ways. My easily amused tiny brain finds your constant over-the-top use of curse words, stroke-out levels of anger, and pretty pictures of airplanes occasionally quite hilarious.
But there are some things even I can't easily forgive. I think you've crossed a line here.

Hahaha oh wow. Nobody really cares too much that I'm generally a contrary asshole, but I say bad things about Firefly and suddenly I'm ~*crossin' da line*~?
Pfft, whatever. I don't care how much of a geek sacred cow it is. I- that is, me, personally- don't like it, for my own personal reasons, and if you can't handle that's not my problem. I dislike certain things just like anyone else, but the fact that I tend to dislike the wrong things seems to make everyone freak the fuck out. It'd be funny if I didn't have to hear the same goddamn things every time someone finds out I don't like Joss Whedon. You people act like 14-year-old Twilight fans, minus the trying to drown your classmates for not liking it.
I don't hold unpopular opinions just to be different, you know. The constant OMG CRUSH THE HERETIC hate gets old after a while, so why the fuck would I go out of my way to subject myself to that?

Actually we do notice your constant need to pick fights. And tag threads appropriately!

Intentionally picking fights is not the same thing as having a contrary opinion. Just so you know.

I'd actually have to agree in part with dethtoll- Whedon's writing can be, for want of a better term, overtly pretentious/ stylised. Significantly, it does tend to be pretentious but otherwise good, which I'd take any day over unpretentious but awful, the current industry standard.
Frankly, I'd have to agree somewhat with criticising Firefly's genre mixing too, perhaps unfairly it always struck me as little more than a way of differentiating it from similar series like Farscape (and both series' ultimate antecedent, Blake's 7).

Dethtoll, I agree with pretty much everything you said in your post (you could have also mentioned the horrible filters used in the film which make it look like everything is soaked in urine), it's without a doubt a bad film.
That being said (and tell you the truth I'm surprised at it myself), I still don't dislike it as much as most people seem to. Yeah, it's juvenile and disgusting and looks horrible and everything else, but as I said before in most ways it's just so removed from the rest of the series that it doesn't really bother me that much (the one thing that bugged me the most was that throwaway comedic line about Weyland-Yutani being bought out by Walmart, that was just insulting). Anyway, at least it wasn't boring.
Also, people may bitch and moan about dethtoll comparing Firefly with A:R, but there is no denying the similarities between the crew of the Betty and Serenity.
I'll give you a hint: Johner = Jayne

Yeah, a big, strong but not-terribly-bright male character is never seen before in action films ;)
