No dice for me :(
Owing to my lack of a gaming-worthy PC, I shall be playing the new Thief on PS4... don't judge me!
I certainly hope for all of you PC players that they will find a way to remove it!

I'm sure someone in the community will find a way to hack it out.
I posed this question on the Eidsos forums too but...will the game be playable without The Shroud? I mean, it's Thief, you have to have some way of detecting if you're visible or not. The new light gem is so limited, I'm not sure it's good enough.
Trust me, I hate The Shroud too, but it seems to be the only tool they're giving us.

Do you think some black fog at the edge of the screen can provide better feedback than the (nu) light gem?

From how things have been described, the Shroud essentially takes over much of the functionality of the visibility gem in the first 3 games. Why they did this, I have no idea.

That's what's confusing, I have no idea. They've been more than a little vague on what all these things do. I guess we won't really know til the game is released.

Yes i remember a post of Freyja where she mentioned that stuff, but...
- i doubt that she was 100% aware what she was talking about
- even if it was true i still see some troubles ( how can you know how much shroud is max shroud?)

I agree.

Just know that we spent a good part of the afternoon comparing footage from the real consumer build to the 101 Trailer and debating whether or not the shroud had been turned on or off for different shots. No undisputed winner in that argument, except maybe you hardcore immersion fans.
If even they cannot tell the difference themselves whether it's turned on or off, then why have it at all? Isn't it utterly useless at that point?

They seem to have just completely lost sight of it's only reason for existing in the first place. They constantly tried to justify it as a means of giving an almost passive and natural means of visibility feedback, yet they now claim to have reduced it to a point where you can't even see it if your actively looking for it. So the obnoxious flashing is the only feedback it's giving, yet they aren't willing to just make the goddamn thing optional?
The entire industry is just a joke to me at this point.

Now why would anyone judge you for playing on a cons- oh, right, it's Thiefgen.
Listen, I'll give you a ride out of town, but you have to make sure you weren't being followed.

Wow, seems Plat's theory was right after all. Just wish it wasn't "magic" to turn it off. =/
So my theory is that the shroud is there because of play-testing. Most testers probably didn't understand that they were vulnerable without it telling them.
