No being named Hortator by a house doesn't make you a member of that house. They're just electing you as a champion of sorts. To join a house you have to find a sponsor, someone who will put a good word about you to the councelors. I've never joined Redoran, but I think you can find a Redguard woman in the Redoran councel chambers inside the giant crab shell in An'drun(sp) who will tell you how to join.

I should just warn you, however, that joining a Great House is a significant decision in your game, and one that cannot be made lightly - Unlike Guilds, of which you can belong to any number, you can ONLY be a member of ONE Great House - joining a House (e.g. Redoran ) will mean that you can never be a member of another Great House, even if you subsequently get kicked out of Redoran. So choose wisely.
There are 3 Great Houses in the game: Hlaalu, Redoran and Telvanni. There are also 2 other Houses that do not feature in the game, Dres and Indoril. Oh, and don't forget the Si{cough} Uhh, never mind.

NOTE: If you've completed the game, you probably already know all that. Just warning you in case you don't. I had to learn the hard way. :(

Speaking of Houses a thought occured to me, where in-game are descriptions of Dres and Indoril found? I got into mighty roaring debate with 'weed about that. He put forth the opinion that the former became the Dren plantation and the latter the temple. I disagreed.

Hrm... Indoril's desc can be gotten from any non-Dunmer Savant, as well as Artisa Arelas in "Vivec, The Abbey of St. Delyn the Wise". Here's the desc given there:
Quote:
House Indoril is one of the five Dunmer Great Houses, and one of the two houses without holdings or interest in Vvardenfell. The city of Almalexia is located in Indoril District, and the Indoril are orthodox and conservative supporters of the Temple and Temple authority. House Indoril is openly hostile to Imperial culture and religion, and preserves many traditional Dunmer customs and practices in defiance of Imperial law.
(There're also a number of books, but they all more-or-less say the same as the above; ie: Indoril is independent of but a strong supporter of the Temple)
Dres's desc can also be gotten from Artisa, which is:
Quote:
Of the five Dunmer Great Houses, House Dres is one of two houses without holdings or interest in Vvardenfell. Dres District is in the south of Morrowind, bordering the swamps and marshes of Black Marsh. House Dres is an agrarian agricultural society, and its large saltrice plantations rely completely on slave labor for their economic viability. Always firm Temple supporters, House Dres is hostile to Imperial law and culture, and in particular opposed to any attempts to limit the institution of slavery.
(In other words, they support slavery but Orvas Dren [a Hlaalu] is not in House Dres)
That's also ignoring the fact that Indoril & Dres don't have any holdings on Vvardenfell, which further disproves the assertion that they're the Temple and Dren Plantation, respectively.
(You may need to use the "addtopic" console command to let Artisa speak of them; eg: addtopic "House Indoril")

He based his argument on an old article in an unreliable magazine that stated that Dres had a large slave plantation near Pelagiad. So, logically, the entire house has been funnelled into Orvas Dren, with a one-letter name change.

Hrm... the logic seems a bit over-dependent upon a single source that may very well be a printer's typo...

Oy.
