Please do yourself (and your friends) a favor by not ruining the game by playing co-op your first time. Single player is MUCH more intense, scary, dramatic, etc. than co-op. You are supposed to feel empathy and sorrow for the crew, terror for some enemies, anger for others, and loneliness as you wander the ship ALONE. These feelings will be GREATLY reduced in co-op, especially if you do that the first time. Playing your first SS2 co-op is analogous to going to see the Lord of the Rings movies with your friends before you read the books by yourself (only worse, because the Lord of the Rings movies were pretty good).
And don't use any mods either, except SHTUP and SHMUP if you must.

Don't ruin your first time! You can NEVER go back!
Play it in singleplayer all vanilla first and then go co-oping and modding.
If you must make it a bit prettier, then get SHTUP. Do not get Rebirth- some models, like the rumbler, are so far from original it hurts.
The monkeys are good though. But you won't know why if you don't see how they were, in the vanilla game!
