Hey guys, I registered specifically to ask this question..
I'm planning on playing co-op with 2 friends, none of us have never played SS2 before, and browsing the web I found custom patches that rebalance the game and high res texture mods..
Given the fact that we're only going to play through it once, should we play with all the high res texture mods and rebalancing patches or plain vanilla?

I would say you should probably play it vanilla the first time through - I suspect you'll want to play it many more times afterwards, when you can mod to your heart's delight!
I think you'll probably get quite a few responses trying to convince you that going co-op for your first game is a poor choice, though (as I've never played it co-op, I can't comment).

Go Vanilla. Since you're playing Co-Op with two other people, though, I do recommend getting Crion's Gamesys mod that allows for Impossible difficulty in Multiplayer. The game is pretty incredibly easy in Co-Operative mode.

I would suggest either playing vanilla or with SHTUP, since the changes in SHTUP make the game look much better without actually changing its content beyond the designers' intentions.
Honestly, though, I wouldn't play it for the first time in co-op, as its atmosphere was tailored to a single-played experience.

how about SHMUP and one of the earlier ADAOB versions on top of that? I don't think there'd be any harm done...

SHUTP is basically OK, but i prefere play games vanilla for first time and thus i recommend that. You should experience it in its original beauty. (Yeah, i'm the orthodox type...)

Or trying to watch a good film for the first time while someone jumps up and down and repeatedly hits the TV screen with a plastic wrench.
