There definitely are parallels, but don't go in expecting Deus Ex' individual gameplay elements to be as polished as they are in games designed to do one particular thing. The stealth isn't as good as in Thief, the gunplay is worse than in most FPS games etc. The game is very much more than the sum of its parts in this respect.
This is precisely what GMDX does. It addresses this very accurate criticism. Now all parts can stand tall, and work together even better. Each part is still probably inferior to a game with laser-narrow focus, yet the lack of polish is no longer an issue.

Thanks for the recommendation guys. I finished Deus Ex this weekend and really enjoyed it. It must have taken me 30+ hours - pretty long game! As for mods I used none - ended up playing it vanilla on an old system. My build was rifles with the speed aug maxed. All three endings were great but if I were to pick one I'd probably pick Helios. It was a memorable experience overall: they definitely don't make them like they used to! Now I'm tempted to see what I'm missing out on with System Shock 2...

And people say you can't play Deus Ex with Run 'n' Gun! ;)

Missing both Deus Ex and SS2? Did you spend the last decade and a half in a maximum security prison or something?

:laff:
No excuse as interesting as that. Rectifying it though. Considering my gameplay style from Deus Ex ("I like to pick them of from a distance.") should I go Psi, Guns, or Tech in SS2?
Starker on 11/7/2016 at 00:49
Tech with a side of guns is probably best for the first outing.

Yes, for your first time, I suggest choosing Navy and sticking with standard and energy weapons. Psi is interesting, but a Psi build makes the game pretty hard in the early levels.

Played some tonight. Damn the many are as creepy as haunts. Wasn't prepared for psychic monkeys either. I was trying to free the bugger before he zapped me!

For some little extra nightmare fuel, some of the hybrids are actually still partly human and are aware what's happening to them. This is why they warn you to run and ask you to kill them.

That's ridiculously twisted. Poor souls. Should I be sneaking past them? I've been bashing away with the wrench but now I feel guilty.
