Can someone tell me exactly where the sweet-spot for baton blackjacking is then?
Myself, I aim at the middle of the back from the crouching position. Seems to work most of the time... I usually downgrade pistol to Untrained and upgrade Low-tech to Advanced right at the beginning, that way even if you fail to knock a guy unconscious with one hit he will start running away instead of shooting you in the face (hint: hit him again! :ebil:), which is not nice at all on Realistic.
Still, if you have doubts (like when even having the enemy start to run away is a potential risk), use the prod. Like I said, there are more than enough chargers around even without buying them.

And you say it stops working later on? Hmmm. So it's electrics or nothing?
Naah, it works just fine till the end - or even better actually, because The only enemies I don't attack with the baton are the MiB and the Commandos, and that's mostly because by the time they appear I usually have enough prod chargers not to bother with the baton here (they're a bit trickier to take down with one hit than everyone else); as far as I remember, there is absolutely no-one bar invincible characters who can withstand a Master-level baton hit in the sweet spot assisted by level-something (4 for sure, but I think it is 3 or even 2) Combat Strength.
Quote:
And it takes 2 tazers to take someone out doesn't it?
Nope. Hit 'em in the sweet spot and they go down with one, even MiBs and Commandos. Of course in case of those guys you'll need Master in Low-tech anyway - saves a lot of effort agains the MiB and is an absolute must against the Commandos, as I found out the hard way.
One note though - sitting enemies. DX seems to have the same problem as Deadly Shadows, that is - it's extremely hard to properly knock out such a person; in this case it might have something to do with their sweet spot being obscured by the chair. Unless you've already well juiced-up with skills and/or augs suitable for melee combat, use the prod here - it will cost you two charges instead of one but will work.

Can you do 1 tazer + 1 baton?
You can, but unfortunately you can never be sure if that will actually suffice - sometimes it might turn out the enemy in question would require one more baton hit, except DX has this annoying thing that a gassed/stunned enemy who is hit by something immediately goes to combat mode, meaning that if the "something" was your baton you'll get shot in the face. It's usually safer to use the prod twice, as then even if they stay on their feet (which is extremely unlikely in case of normal-human enemies) they will still be stunned; then, if you want to save the third charge, you can usually use the baton safely.
Another combo which works quite well for saving prod charges, especially useful when for some reason you have to rush an enemy head-on, is pepper gas. Spray them till they react, then switch to the prod and take them down. DON'T use the baton for this - you WILL get shot.
Quote:
And can you do this on the MiBs and other enemies later on?
Like I said, it depends on the skills and the augs. In general, yes you can - minus the pepper gas spray trick against the Commandos, as - as you should well know from reading certain e-mails, their armour protects them from toxins.
A while ago I posted a thread about my take on the no-kills approach. This is not exactly melee-only (that one I did later), but strongly melee-oriented - as the game progresses I find myself using the crossbow less and less frequently, ultimately having it around only to launch flare darts. You can find the thread here.

Tazer and baton certainly worked for me.
At least on the first level, I can't remember how far I got with that idea.

Thanks Marecki, that was exactly what I needed. I don't know how relevant this is to the number of tazer ammos you can get/find bu I play on Realistic. Ok, I'm going to give it another go as soon as the new models are done.

It is bizarre, but yeah: headshots count for 8x damage UNLESS the damage is 'knockedout' or 'stunned' (baton and prod). The determination of 'head' is ropey at best (good ol collision cylinders) so headshots from the SIDE count as torso shots. Yes, I know. :erg:
Conversely, hitting someone in the back (but not the head) at point blank range gives 10x damage irrespective.
Also, it appears that hitting someone when they're stunned does 4x damage, too, and this is additive with headshots, but NOT the point blank range stuff. (which explains why my tactic of 'zap, then shoot in the face' has always been so productive, I guess).
So basically, if zapping/batoning, never bother trying for headshots, and always try to hit them in the back.

Didn't you all hear the man? The direction on the compass changes when you switch level!
HOW DID WE EVER TAKE THIS GAME SERIOUSLY? :(

I tend to go for the back of the neck with batons/prods, seems to work well. Except on Commandos of course, where you go for the little hatch thing above their arse.

In my opinion, Deus Ex was and is the absolute no holds barred without a doubt best game ever to come forth from a studio. Period. Thief is my alltime favorite game for replayability, atmosphere, and gameplay, but Deus Ex, as soon as you set foot in its world and experienced its grip, remains the epitomy of what PC and console studios should strive for. The fact that nearly a decade later no studio has managed to dent its position at the pinnacle of gaming attests to its greatness. Deus Ex is not a game. It is a best selling novel in binary form. If a game ever manages to topple Deus Ex from its lofty platform in years to come, I will be among the first to lay it to rest - sheathed in laurels and ribbons.
Ok - maybe a bit of overkill, but oh my gawd this title rocked my world.

I agree. I installed it on my new laptop (wide-screen) and have to play it in a window so animation sequences say correct on playback. Once you're into the game, it still keeps you focused.

My vote:
Download both from direct2drive.
Play Deus Ex GOTY first. If you have the same reaction I did, the game will be so good that it spoils any other game you play in the futre.
DXIW after that. odds are, after playing as good a game as DX1, you will be sorely disappointed. The game should have been excellent, but it is dumbed down to make it more open to console players, and lacks the connection to current events that made the first game so immersive.

DX1 was definitely better than DX2, but any game where you can whallop a pop singer over the head with an energy sword is an automatic winner.

it came out in 1999. 6 years. 6 years is not nearly a decade
