I so want to replay Deus Ex. I tried once, going for a no-kills stylee.
But the game mechanics are too poor to be able to allow it.
Nope, it's been done. Maybe your skills are too poor to allow it. :p
SubJeff on 17/10/2005 at 00:45
I know it's been done, that's why I wanted to try it.
I can actually manage it but the way you have to do it is game assery of the nth degree. Shooting with knock out darts = run away until they drop. Come on. I'm not doing that for any game - arbitary action because of poor programming? You can f*ck right off.
TheGreatGodPan on 17/10/2005 at 01:33
I used the darts+running all the time, and I wasn't even trying for any special play. I just hadn't really played many FPSs before and didn't feel like getting into a big firefight!
What I'm really impressed by is the no items/augs/skills playthrough. Wow.

Yeah, let me play the world's smallest violin for ya. Can you hear it?
Tranqued enemies only home in on you for two or three second before they start running away. So shoot, then seek cover. Sounds like you're just throwing a hissy fit because Deus Ex's AI doesn't let you snipe with impunity. God forbid you have to work a little.

let me just say.... somebody at ion storm needs to be kicked in the ass... HARD.
i am trying out deus ex 1 ..... i just got to hells kitchen, or whatever. i entered some kind of building (near the start) from the backside, and whenever you enter the building's loadzone, the compass switches exactly 180 degrees. i don't know if anybody else noticed this? but the exact same thing happened when i entered the penthouse in the hotel near the beginning of deus ex 2 when i tried it out ...
wtf is wrong with these people? i have a geographical memory, so i easily notice these mistakes.
it's just very disconcerting to see that their map design was so sloppy that they couldn't even keep certain loadzones consistent with the rest of the world. pathetic. what good is a compass at all if it doesn't even work?
is this game really worth my time?
Hmmmm when 1st played Deus Ex, i got used to the world of DX, sat back and got TOTALLY inthraled in the game! I didnt even bother worring about the errors and what not. As a matter of fact, it never even slip my mind from New york City to area51, Deus Ex Rocked my world! :thumb: AND i also played at night so i could'nt see my hands at the keybourd (To emurse my self further in Deus Ex! Does anyones else play liek that? ) it helped me so much realising the real world statements the game made. And alot of it was Scary! I personally LOVE the writing in the game and how it all plays out with the player and his decisions. Man, the music and the clouds passing by and the dark atmoshere, ahhhh man, :cheeky: (shuffles around for Deus ex and holds it up) See this?

i'm sorry, this is just extremely retarded. i am getting stuck at the top of every ladder. and don't even fucking mention going down ladders. i have to quicksave every time before i go up or down because i end up falling to my death most of the times. and the AI? is so super shit... you can just pick off all the little men in the little warehouse but the ones on the other levels really don't give a shit about the gunshot sounds or their buddies getting capped.
what the fuck is this, 1992? this is supposed to be the best video game of all time?
i'm severely disappointed. and the "plot" really isn't very interesting so far.
edit: i just finished the warehouse level and am now back to unatco headquarters... and north is a different direction than it was when i was here before? i have already noticed 3 directional inconsistencies
i'm serious, these map designers were so fucking retarded. this game is so unpolished/unfinished, i am having SERIOUS trouble understanding why anyone would praise it

I never had a problem with the ladders io. Perhaps there is something up with your computer or the install and perhaps that explains this direction thing.

No, I'm bored because when I snipe or dart someone who is in a crowd they telepathically give the super radar to all their friends who are standing next to them. I've sniped people from miles away, from high up and the guys next to them instantly know where I am and come running.
To top it off you can dart/kill someone and their buddies don't even care/notice the dead bodie
Stop being an asshole Zylon, you and I and everyone who ever played DX know that the AI is a bit crap. It's a great game but that doesn't mean it's perfect.

I never had any problems with climbing ladders.
The AI is ceartainly not the best and could have been better.
But I find the plot and overall gameplay very good and thats why I enjoyed this game so much.
And the map designers did a pretty good job imo. Calling them retarded just because they oversaw the minor problem with the compass (that you seem to be the only person that cares about it) is just stupid.
I can't understand how you can enjoy any game because it seems that you complain about every little thing you can find.
The reason why fans call it one of the best games ever is because even if it had some glitches it was still a lot of fun to play.

It's based on the fucking unreal engine, for gods sake. Unreal AI was not intended for sneaking, or for supar intelligent responses like magically learning what happened on a different map. That they managed to bash the AI into a semblance of realistic behavior at all is fucking impressive. This is, after all, something primarily intended for controlling a pawn that spends its time charging down thin corridors firing a flak cannon.
Yes, it IS possible to make an 'alert' status carry across maps, and yes, there is even code (and barks, no less) for troops discovering, and becoming alerted by, a corpse. You do have to specifically set it in the editor, though, and sometimes, they clearly forgot (unsurprising when you see QUITE how many fucking variables scriptedpawn AI has..). And yes, apparently the compass is off in some levels, something I can honestly say you are near-unique in noticing and actually being bothered by.
All of this can, if you really, really get bugged by it, be 'fixed' in the editor. Easily. There is, after all, a full editing suite-style SDK, and if not a thriving mod community, a small mod community of clever, focussed people.
It's also not as if this is a NEW game. It may not compare to some games nowadays, in your opinion, but at the time it was truly groundbreaking. Not necessarily graphically, or AI-wise, but for plot/story, immersion and atmostphere it's pretty much STILL right up there. All the little things, like food items, various kinds of booze, newspapers, utterly useless single shot weapons, things that DIDN'T need to be there, but were put there to make the place feel like a living breathing world that goes on regardless of the player actions. More like a world you're a part of, rather than a world placed entirely for the purposes of advancing the plot.

Pretty much sums it up.
In responce to Subjective Effect's problem - they don't do that for me.
I tranq a guy he gets spooked, looks around for me, then runs for the closest alarm before collapsing. If he has mates they look around too, but even without augs no-one just locks onto me by magic radar or anything, unless I'm using a loud gun close enough for them to hear it.
There aren't a huge number of actually concealing shadows in the game though, since you have to look for places the weapon model is pretty much black, so it's mostly a stay out of sight thing anyway.
And as for the world - I think I spent as much time reading all the books and newspapers and emails as much as anything else - I like the Chinese Railgun incident, and how it plays out across the course of the game in the discarded newspapers. The newsstands in IW were just so much poorer by comparison.
