Print authors don't have to worry about hanging their narrative off an interactive experience. To say no video games have a good story is like saying no novels have good gameplay.
It's entirely possible for a game to have a good story, but because gameplay comes first, it has to be told in such a way that the story is primarily experienced, rather than having it spoon-fed to you as a third-party observer. Different medium, different storytelling techniques. If you have to explicitly read, "Bob betrayed Alice" instead of observing the gameworld and coming to that conclusion yourself, then no wonder you don't think any games have "good" stories.
Or maybe your complaint is that game stories aren't as good as War and Peace, or whatever. Well no shit. Most stories, period, aren't that good.

Dan Brown? I'll take the kitchen-sink conspiracies of Deus Ex over his tripe every day of the week, plus Diemday.

Yeah, I've give Deus Ex another try, it will explain some of the characters and the world of Invisible War to a greater extend, as well as being a good game in it's own right (haven't heard that yet, right?). Regardless though, 30 minutes isn't really enough time to give the game- especially if you didn't even enter the statue. I know I hadn't really gotten into the game by then. The game is certainly worth playing till the end of the first New York Section before you start to judge it.
Lastly, Dan Brown is honestly not a very good author, I fullheartily promise you the story of Deus Ex is better crafted, more insightful and thrilling then either Angels and Demons or the Da Vinci Code, I can't comment on his other work as I haven't read them. I'm not saying he's a bad author, he's just not the best.

how did i know i was gonna get harrassed about that? it's pseudo-historical thriller fiction that is easy to pick up and highly engaging. i like it because it's easy to read before i go to bed, cuz i don't have a lot of time these days because i have a 1.5 year old son

let me just say.... somebody at ion storm needs to be kicked in the ass... HARD.
i am trying out deus ex 1 ..... i just got to hells kitchen, or whatever. i entered some kind of building (near the start) from the backside, and whenever you enter the building's loadzone, the compass switches exactly 180 degrees. i don't know if anybody else noticed this? but the exact same thing happened when i entered the penthouse in the hotel near the beginning of deus ex 2 when i tried it out ...
wtf is wrong with these people? i have a geographical memory, so i easily notice these mistakes.
it's just very disconcerting to see that their map design was so sloppy that they couldn't even keep certain loadzones consistent with the rest of the world. pathetic. what good is a compass at all if it doesn't even work?
is this game really worth my time?
