Hi all! I'm a longtime goer of the ttlg forums... but on the thief side, not the deus ex side. I've highly enjoyed the thief series since it came out, but I have never really given any of the system shock/deus ex games much attention. I tried Shock 1 & 2 both when they came out (for literally a few minutes each) but could never really get into them. I had never played Deus Ex 1 or 2, until a couple months ago, but I kept hearing really great things about them.... So i figured i would give them a try... so I got them on ebay on the cheap. Tried out Deus Ex 1 a couple months ago and i REALLY couldn't get into it. Now granted, I only played it for about 30 minutes so I didn't even get into the statue of liberty or anything.... but it just didn't seem very compelling/interesting to me... so i didn't keep playing it.
Now I just loaded up Deus Ex 2 last night... and was captivated!! I ended up playing it for 4 hours (starting at midnight) and being late for work today because of it :laff: .... so i am highly considering just playing through part 2 and enjoying it as its own game and just completely forgetting about the 1st game.... but the problem is... I don't want to be completely confused about the storyline...
So my question is...
Do i need to have played the 1st game to appreciate the storyline of the second one? I seem to be keeping up with it pretty well so far, but i'm sure having played the 1st would give me more insights about the Order & the WTO and what is really going on ...?
Now I know most of the fanboys are going to say "YOU HAVE TO PLAY THE FIRST ONE FIRST!!", but i'm the kind of person who has never really enjoyed storylines in video games very much anyway. It seems like they are all the same... "oh, my village was destroyed, i must avenge my father...... kill a bunch of bad guys, and then kill the final boss and rescue the girl" ...... I never finished Thief 1 and that never prevented me from enjoying thief 2... and likewise, never finished 2 but i still like 3... so... i guess i am kind of a habitual game-not-finisher for games that i actually like. (i have only beaten 2 out of my top 5 favourite games), but contrast that to 2004 where i completed all of the following: painkiller, far cry, doom 3, half life 2, chronicles of riddick... guess i was compelled to beat all the new first person shooters last year?? heeh.. i am still savouring thief and i don't feel an urge to beat those games any time soon, as i know i will still be playing them for years to come... whereas i doubt i will play any of those fps' again, although i will probably pick up half life 2 again in a couple years, and possibly far cry.
anyway, sorry for the ramble.
any insights are appreciated

now i'm POSITIVE that DX2 is a good game in its own right. i'm sure that none of the hardcore fanboys don't like it because it doesn't live up to their expectations that were set by the first. but if you compare it to other, shallower games, it is still an involved experience and a good game. seriously, i played PAINKILLER and enjoyed it. i know i am going to like dx2. can i get some constructive feedback from somebody who actually enjoyed both games?

Sorry, I only ever played the first one, but yes, it is a good game. I made it through my first playthrough without any need of guides or cheats, so the difficulty isn't too hard on its own.(That's why people do special 'no kill' challenges and the like)
I do not know how the story links together, or even IF it links together with the sequel.
But anyway, it is a fine game, and quite fun too. If you can find it, get it, it should be quite affordable nowadays anyway.

That is soo true. You'd think the same way if you'd played the first one.

Ok, so you asked if you should play DX1 first. The answer is absolutely YES. Not just because it's superior to the sequel, but the stories are connected too. And because Deus Ex is the best game ever made (IMO). You will understand DX2's plot better if you played DX1 first.

Same here with Painkiller. I loved it. And you're right that there are lot of "shallower" games out there than DX2. If you're sure you're going to like DX2, then I'm sure you're going to LOVE DX1. So go for it!

Then you are a mushcore gamer, and I don't care.
However, compared to Painkiller, I can certainly see how you'd find DX:IW a captivating experience.

I think it would be innaccurate to say taht because you enjoy straight-forward shooters (which I assume Painkiller to be, never having played it myself), you will undoubtedly enjoy dx2. Dx2's gameplay really kind of sucked, including the combat, which most shooters center around. It also fails (imo) in the storyline and rpg aspects, so saying that "I like shooters, I will like dx2 because it's shallow" doesn't really hold much water.
Play DX1 first. Maybe play DX1 only. I enjoyed DX2 in the sense that it was a fun way to pass the time, but it isn't a work of art the way DX1 was.

"mushcore"?? i'm sorry, even the "brilliant" game storylines come nothing close to good fiction authors like orson scott card, robert asprin, dan brown. it's like all video game storylines were written by a two year old in comparison to literature. maybe there are some decent storylines out there, but i haven't seen them yet.
i play games because they are challenging and fun, not for some shitty storyline. if i want storyline, that is when i read a book.
