Sorry to make such a generic thread, but I've been intrigued by Arx Fatalis for a long time. I've been considering buying it for what seems like years, but I never seem to go through with it.
I know TES IV: Oblivion is coming out soon and it'll keep me occupied for a while, but should I bother getting Arx Fatalis? Is it really as awesome as I think it is?

How awesome do you think it is? :)
It's a really fine game in the Underworld style. Far from perfect, but well worth playing IMO.

Should you buy it?
What sort of answer did you expect to get on this forum?
The story and voice acting in Arx leave something to be desired and the combat is too easy most of the time, but the puzzles are devious and levels are oozing with atmosphere.
It's worth a play, definitely.

Obviously biased ones, but I was hoping I could hear some of the finer points of the game. ;) Reading reviews are good and all, but I prefer (very nearly almost) human contact.
I've played a lot of different games, though I'm far from a hardcore gamer. My favorites have been the Myst series (which is why the puzzles intrigue me) and Morrowind (so the rpg-ness of Arx Fatalis should also appeal to me). I didn't know puzzles played much of a part in the game, so I've got one more reason to get it.

Your best bet is probably to search this forum (or just browse the posts since the release).
You'll get a pretty reasonable idea of the game's strengths and weaknesses that way, and probably in more detail than you'll get now (although do bear in mind that a great many bugs were squished in the patching process, so a few of the early criticisms may not apply :)

it a great (though flawed) game w/excellent atmosphere. Reminds me of Ultima 9 and Underworld mixed/

Just got it today and have played a little bit already. And already I'm loving it. Very Thief-like atmosphere, though of course more magical. Looks nice for a 5-year old game, too (running it at max video settings).

I saw a DVD cased copy in my local GameStation of Arx this morning, along with a boxed copy of The Dig! :wot: £7.99 for Arx and 0.99p for The Dig! Can't complain about that! Bought both.
Everything's intact for both games. The Dig even had a reciept inside the box, dated 1997!
Oh yeah, they were also selling an old ZX Spectrum 128k for £49.99 :wot: I thought that was a right con! One can find those things thrown inside cardboard boxes at Car Boot sales, for a few quid!
Oh great! After playing this for a little bit, i come to rooms full of Goblins, who keep killing me! All i got is my fist! I've also yet to do a simple thing like lighting a torch! :o Half of the models are white! Bleh!

well, arx has a VERY nice world, that's why i think it is worth playing. and by nice i don't mean graphics (although they are quite good too), but a world designed with fantasy that has atmosphere. i rarely have played a game so consequently (that is, many games i start, don't touch it for a few days, etc. Not so with arx.)
unfortunately, the story is among the most ridiculous shit i ever witnessed in a computer game. but well, most of the time you'll be playing, not following the story so to speak, so that's ok.
the interface could have been better too. it is more complicated than it would have to be.
