Age and relative size of the teacher matters too, a petite grandmother would not be as expected to intervene as a strapping and atheletic twenty-year old.
It's possible though that a petite grandmother might be more successful. Just thinking about my petite mother (5ft) at the age of 76, breaking up a fight between a couple of men. I think they were just shocked she'd had the nerve and it was enough to send them on their way.

Well, pepper spray is a physical entity, and its use to separate fighting children would certainly count as intervention, so uh... dumb question?
Yeah! And screaming at them would count too because of the physical molecules of air required to transmit auditory signals!

I'm with ZB on this one...
Hose 'em down and go back to the lesson...

So where you come from there is no distinction between physical and verbal abuse? Interesting.

I recall watching both boys turn on the teacher during a smack down and leaving high fiving each other. I think its best to step back as they do in a soccer match. They just wait till they are both on the ground. Either that or hire some bouncers in the hallways or some kind of private security or level three combative cerified instructors. Thats the way..teachers should hire on trained referees. In a couple of personal cases the teachers always seemed to show up one punch too late like when you're sprawled bleeding and broken on the bathroom floor. And then it's not like your going to rat on anyone for fear of retaliation outside of the school.
In the case of the eight-girl brawl, (wow) all the teacher should have done was to have made his presence known and threaten expulsion. To break up a physical fight you have to get physical yourself and teenage girls can get pretty violent that and they can get into the whole inappropriate touch scenario and then you've got a teacher out of a job.

Anyone can get pretty violent, regardless of age or gender.
EDIT: PAGE 2, I hate you.

Certify the teachers in Krav Maga, and pass out waivers.

My high school had a resident security/police officer, so this issue never came up. It was obviously always his job.
Aside from things like occassional fights and smokers, though, his primary job was to show off his arm muscles and brag about his days as a Playgirl model. I guess they felt it was still worth having him around. It was a large student body.

I say let them duke it out. Fighting in school is what lets irrational kids get their irrational anger out. If they can't, they bring guns to school.

No, no.
GTA is what makes them bring guns to school. I read it on the internet.
