My freshman year of high school (9th grade to the rest of y'all), one of my teachers attempted to break up a fight and got a chunk of his hand chewed off by one of the perps. Did he get any bonus pay? A Purple Heart? No, nothing more than a "thank you" and about seven rabies shots.

I remember teachers at my high school actually talking about this. Supposedly, they're not supposed to do anything, because if a student somehow got hurt by the teacher, it'd be lawsuit time. (Although one teacher mentioned that she had stood between students before, even though she wasn't supposed to).
Anyways, if I was a teacher, I might yell at them to stop, but no way I'd do anything physical, just not worth the risk.

I say in a school where fighting is a problem every classroom should have a hose.

It wasn't broken in the first place.

In this case I think the teacher should've called for help, from the police if necessary. Part of the early problem was that he wasn't heard, a bullhorn might have been a useful piece of equipment to recommend. I don't think this teacher should have lost his job, sixteen year olds know better than to fight.
If had been a bunch of six-year olds rather than sixteen year olds, then I would expect the teacher to intervene. Age and relative size of the teacher matters too, a petite grandmother would not be as expected to intervene as a strapping and atheletic twenty-year old.

Riot gear. Tasers. Rubber bullets. Tear gas. A wet towel.
More than one faculty member supervising.

a teacher who lost his job because he didn't intervene in a fight between 8 teenage girls
Perhaps he lost his job for squirting grease all over the girls as they fought!
The school probably had to fire him so the parents wouldn't have to take their children out of school and the school wouldn't look bad. I'm sure if he did get fired, it was forced upon the person in charge rather than decided...

Does pepper spray count as physical intervention?

Well, pepper spray is a physical entity, and its use to separate fighting children would certainly count as intervention, so uh... dumb question?
