This is weird. When I change the default controls (necessary because if the borked WASD) and scroll down the list, returning to the game the left mouse button no longer functions for selecting inventory icons, the current weapon fires instead.
Normally any weapon you're holding while in this mode shouldn't fire. You should only be able to fire while in shoot mode. So there's a problem with the game detecting which mode I'm in.
This only happens when I click on the scroll arrows through the key bindings, even if I don't actually change any of the key bindings, if I scroll through the list then the left mouse button stops working properly.
If I load the default bindings, everything is fine again and I can bind keys up to Lean Forward but if I scroll further the left mouse button borks.
The game was fine until I reinstalled it in my attempt to fix the screen tearing (vsync) issue. I ran the SS2Tool to patch the game and Rebirth and SHTUP are installed.
EDIT
Fixed it, in an ad-hoc sort of way. First I cleared all the bindings then mapped the keys I wanted and saved it then I quit (just before that, I checked the game and the left mouse button was shooting while in inventory mode again). Opened up user.bnd and copied all the settings to the clipboard. Next I ran the game again and and loaded the default controls, then quit. Opened user.bnd again and pasted my bindings over the original ones and saved it. Ran the game again and hey presto! My key bindings and the left mouse button does NOT shoot while in inventory mode. Case closed.
I leave this post here in case anyone else has this problem...if there are any people still playing the game that is.

FYI, this issue has been known for years, a simple search through the forums would have helped you.
Glad you found a solution on your own though, enjoy the game :)

Before anyone complains, this is covered in the FAQ, under 'Broken use/shoot mode problem' :p

Thanks, I did search but must have missed it. Was this an old problem then? I thought it was because of the mods and running it on Windows 7 etc. Can't say I remember this bug from when the game first came out.
