Hello, new user here decided to drop by and pick the brains of the pros. My partner and I are looking to get involved in an unofficial sequel to System Shock 2. We could update particle effects and character models using the UDK. This would allow us to upgrade this beautiful game into a next gen game. I've encountered a road block; I've heard its possible to import the character files into blender, but this is an outdated process that no longer reflects the capabilities of the current tool. With this game we could take this epic story and reimmerse players in what modern players refer to as the "Spirit of the 90's" in game form.

Well, EA is now out of the way. Big question is now does new rights owner send C&D letters to authors of these kind of mods. We will see it.

Oh joy, it's been a while since we've had one of these.

While the feedback recieved so far is encouraging; no one addressed my inquiry. I was curious if it was even possible to do so. This is more an educational enterprise than a profitable one, as there will be no possibility of profiting from the design providing the owner does not hire my colleagues and I. In this case I'm looking for volumes of information. Perhaps people with reference lists already set in place would be willing to provide sources. Currently I'm just in the stage of 3D modeling so only phase one of a four phase operation. I plan on making this a kickstart if nothing else.

Okay, here's an idea-- instead of planning on creating a sequel to System Shock from scratch in another engine, which, I must humbly assure you, based on the success rate of the many, many overambitious modders who have come here previously with much the same goals, IS NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN, why not instead put your energies toward a more achievable goal, like creating some graphical mods for SS2?

RGradeRig, ZylonBane is correct. It has nothing to do with whether you will be capable of such a project (although that is a challenge in itself) but doing SS related works in another engine is suicide. Trust us on this.
If you have skills to offer the system shock community, these could still be put to very good use. I have a few half-finished projects, some of which you would probably find trivial, which I could use your help on. Let me know if you are interested.

I don't think it's either impossible or suicide. I've dreamt many times such a thing could happen, after all, we got TDM and now would be as good a time as any to say "screw legal issues, we're making this" -though I wish someone for once wanted to make a sequel to System Shock 1- but it's just not going to happen from someone who asks about importing SS2 models into another engine. Better luck next time!

Certainly not impossible but it would be wrong to give someone the impression that they are immune to legal action on account of recent events. That would still be speculation and since someone else would be taking the fall for attempting a project which is still technically illegal, it's best to advise against it and let the person make their decision with proper warning.

Let's be honest here, just name it a spiritual sequel and then when it's ready and noone's looking, get some "unknown stranger" to publish a patch putting in all the right names, resources and locations like nothing happened.
Frankly I'm not buying the idea that legal proceedings are the reason why SS2 Rebooted / Sapphire Scar went down the drain. If you want something strong enough, you do it, whatever anyone says. I have nothing against arguing "U GONNA GET SUED" with new people who want to make an unofficial System Shock sequel, and I did it more than once, but only to see if they were dedicated enough not to give a damn.
