Hey all. Long time no longon! :thumb:
I'll get straight to the point: a recent assignment for my English class involves creating a video 'demonstrating technology'. :cheeky: And thus I have an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone - make that tutorial mission for Shocked I keep meaning to do, and make a video of it for class. Maybe even several missions with video!
Now that I have your attention, I need some assistance from the community about exactly what concepts and actions should be included. For the sake of planning let's assume a maximum of three missions roughly the size of MedSci. What would you like to see demonstrated in each? In related groups of some kind?
I'm planning to incorporate a short concepts list/beginner's guide called 'Shocking Knowledge", which I'll finally publish sometime very soon, but something tells me it won't be adequate. I need input. A lot of input. So rally to me fellow hackers! We can pull this off...together!

I assume you've read the tutorial that comes with ShockED. That's a good place to start; there's a lot of information in there that has needed a facelift for a good while. Also, stuff like gravshafts, replicators, and corpses would be good. Maybe even spawning and ecologies.
Yes, I know we have tutorials for all of those things already, but having it all in one centralized location can't hurt. Plus, a video tutorial showing how to set them up would be useful (provided it's done well).

Not even the half of it. It would be infinitely useful.
Dark Star, I've been trying to get this to happen for a while now and I got MrTrip on board before he sort of dissappeared. I highly recommend collaborating with him since he may very well have a lot of it done already. Last I heard he was well on his way. I asked him to make chapters pertaining to the primary features of a functional mission with objectives, traps, scripts, s&r, you name it. These things need to be illustrated badly IMO.

Thank you for the information, I'll try to contact this fellow tutorial maker.
FYI, illustrating all the aforementioned features is a bit out of my league at the moment. The tutorial video I have in the works right now focuses mostly on the following:
-How to install SS2Tool & Shocked Toolkit.
-3D navigation.
-Default movement controls in game and editor modes.
-Understanding the XYZ coordinate system (very confusing at first!).
-Concept of 'carving out' levels.
-Creating, moving, resizing and orienting rooms.
-Calling up textures and applying them to surfaces; scaling and orienting same.
-Creating, moving and orienting objects.
-Basic lighting.
-Correctly linking up the player character with use of playerfactory.
-Simple guidelines for room decoration.
Showing how to make an honest-to-goodness fanmission with all the requisite bells and whistles from scratch is a noble goal, but prospective Shockeditors need to learn to walk before they can run. (so to speak)

Agreed. Afterwards you make think of elaborating some common stuff: doors, gravshafts, elevators, level transitions, objectives etc. But even the basics would be a welcome addition for many.

So long as they eventually do learn to run...I agree as well.

Imo, the best possible addition would be a database and explanation of all gamesys functions: links, tweqs, whatever. The lists we have are largely incomplete.

headsup, I'll have a video posted <s>tomorrow</s>saturday showing basic layout, XYZ orientation and building 1 cube with 1 basic light and basic texture. I just have to get the sound right (I mean the commentary, not Shocked sound). If feedback is positive I'll post more.

Well it's ready but my upload speed is horrible. Transfer should finish sometime during the night (it's 9pm here) so I'll post the actual link tomorrow.
It's 30ish minutes long and it covers:
- presentation of ShockEd
- navigation
- portalising and game mode
- adding a light
- adding a texture
