Hey fellas,
First of all, I'm new here and I'd like to say that Shock 2 is a really great game, in fact one of the best ever. And because it is so good I need your help to get it run properly... :p
My first problem was already solved by the sticky thread on how to run it on XP (I have a Dual Core processor which caused crashes, but that's not a problem any more).
However, the second, quite annoying problem is that the game runs *way* too fast. On my old system, a 2 ghz single core, it ran almost perfectly. In fact, there were even some points in the game where it slowed down quite drastically. But now, on my 3,6 ghz processor, it runs ridiculously fast. I mean, my normal walking speed is already faster than the "sprinting" speed on my old system. Imagine going into the UNN recruitment center at the beginning of the game in like 4 seconds...
How can I deal with that? I already tried lowering the priority of the process in the task manager, but that didn't help at all. Is there a way to simulate a slower processor for Shock 2?
Oh, and my OS is Win XP 64 bit, just in case that matters.
Greetings from Germany (and excuse me please for my bad english, by the way ;) )
Edit:
Okay, sorry, I made that thread too quickly. I solved the problem already by myself turning everything on I could (high resolution, anti aliasing etc). I guess vsync and a fixed refresh rate also helps. Nooow I can finally enjoy the game and FINISH it, I never made it past Deck 6. Too damn creepy =D

Never seen it run any faster than it's supposed to. I play it on a 2.66 GHz Xeon and don't see any such issues.
Back in the DOS days, this was a frequent problem. There was utilities that let you slow your machine down by a set percentage. I'm not sure if such utilities exit for modern Windows or not.
I am, however, inclined to wonder if it's your amd64 XP version that's to blame.

Thanks for the reply. I also thought that x64 is responsible for that at the beginning, but I guess it really were the system specs. Now that I turned on whatever I could, it works well.
Crouching around the mall area right now... I love this game, but it's too scary.... And I'm easy to scare

Welcome to the forums. The FAQ (if you haven't read it) lists the fixes you used, and it also mentions that you can use a DirectX overlay if you don't want to have a low refresh rate. Just FYI.

Thank you. And no, I unfortunately didn't look into the FAQ, my fault ;) But I'll check it out for the tip you just gave me.

Crank up the eye candy. 1600x1200 res, 16x Anti-aliasing, 16x anisotropic filter... whatever.

You mean, people aren't doing this already?

I can't go higher than 8xAA and 1024 x 768 myself, and you forgot to suggest SHTUP. :D

this can make the game laggy&choppy, but it still wont run at proper speed.it may sound weird, but its true, you have to see it yourself to understand.
just use one of the fixes that are (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=60930#toofast) in the FAQ (v-sync fix if you ahave an LCD and dx overlay fix if you have a crt) and you will be fine.

I don't think modern computers will have much trouble running SS2 on 1600 x 1200 with 16xAF/AA. :erm:
VSync seems to be a common fix for speed problems. I've also heard that dualcores cause that behavior in both older & newer games, but Dark engine games wouldn't run for long with both cores enabled anyways.
