I find it disappointing that every new modder looks for people to help him, instead of him asking if he can help an existing mod team.
icemann on 15/5/2007 at 09:51
And absolutely refusing to assist other mod teams for that matter. If you think back to when this new project was announced and how many people suggested he help the citadel project instead. A project with many members already. And the reply to that soon after.
All the SS1 remakes people should all get together rather than each doing separate projects. Together you stand, alone you fall.

I've sat here for a few minutes trying to find a way to reply without being a smartass and I've come up short each time... It's getting hard to keep happy when I reply because of the inevitable bitching that follows. Why don't I do things your way? How come I won't do things the way you want it done? Oh no, he's not joining a mod team, he wants his own, that's disappointing!
Here's a barbeclue: Fucking deal with it. This is my project, my direction, and my lead. I don't like the Dark engine. I don't want to make something based on a dated game engine that doesn't support SS1's features. Before you start chastising me again for my decision to work with my own team (which, oddly enough, is how I work best; given the experience I've had), maybe you should try stepping up to the plate and helping CCP yourselves? I know, that might involve YOU having to do something, God forbid!

What?
Which of SS1's features does it not support?
Sensearound? A modern game with mouselook doesn't really need a rear-view mirror anyway.
Aircraftkiller on 15/5/2007 at 13:03
I happen to enjoy using Sensaround, but there's other things that SS2 doesn't properly support - a level overhead MFD with enemies that isn't on the bottom of your screen, for example. Be that as it may, I still don't want to work on a dated engine. If you guys moved to OPDE I'd definitely be more interested in helping CCP, but for the time being I fully intend on getting my own team assembled for this.

Well, at least you've got fire and enthusiasm! Hope it works well for you. I, personally, haven't the first clue about engines or graphics or stuff so I can't help, but I appreciate your willingness to give it a go.

There simply
aren't any people who love the series and are near professional 3d character modelers with the time to spare. It's not like there's a whole community we're overlooking, chief.
Should anyone here care to make themselves sick with envy, they should check out the (
http://hrp.duke4.net/) Duke Nukem 3D High Resolution Pack. These guys are well on their way toward upgrading every single texture in the game, and have already replaced all the old 2D sprites with fully animated 3D models. And they've only been working on it since around 2005!
icemann on 16/5/2007 at 09:15
Downloaded that a fair while back. They`ve done some GREAT work on that.
Really need to test out that Quake TC for Doom3 at some stage. Heard theres several more levels in the works due to the success of the first TC.

Goodness, and everyone wonders why there are no finished remakes yet? The first page and a half was about barrels, and the rest is everyones ideas on how to make SS1 remake. Of corse nothing will ever be done this way.
And now back on topic, (eerm..what was the topic again? ah yes, new models!) Aircraftkiller, I think your first barrel model is SPOT ON. Maybe I'd prefer a more classic skull like this:
Inline Image:
http://www.labellab.com/xp/showdetailsstock.asp?myimage=%2Fcompanies%2Fsafetyxpress%5CDetailed%2FD%2FDOT%2D1235%2Egif,
but year is 2072, so your version is perfectly believable. What is important is that it's main components match, you got the proportions right, those upper and lower "belts", shape and proportion of the sticker. Little details like rounded bottom are a nice touch, the barrel is not any less recognizable, and it adds detail. It looks more interesting this way, rather than being just a regular cylinder, and I love it. (besides looking at the original it looks to me like it really might have rounded bottom).
Another nice detail that could be implemented in the remake, is that when you blow them up, barrels don't completely desintegrate. I think, maybe there could be some leftovers, like burned out bottom or something. It might make things more realistic, without being too 'unoriginal'. If you send me your models, I might take a look if it would work and play around a bit. I can make no promises ofc. I love your work, so keep up. (and hope you can ignore OT posts as much as possible) :)
