The rounded bottom is very strange - it makes it look like the barrel is designed to be easily knocked over.
I think it would look better if the base of the barrel was straight - and it would save polygons, too.

The one in the first screenshot looked like that, too, but the new one even more so.
Maybe if you make that layer maybe 20-40% transparent, so it gets a bit of the dirt from the layer underneath, and also becomes a little less clear white?

The white's coming from the spec map, mostly. If I dull that specific area down it'll fix it. The rounded bottom is part of the sprite I modeled the barrel from, so I'd rather not change it... The last barrel I have to finish is the bio-barrel. That'll knock three items out of a large list of things I still need to do.

You could make the skull a sticker, so it could have dirt marks, scratches and "crippled" in places.

Where is there a rounded base on that sprite?
The pixels around the edges are higher than those around the centre, to give the illusion of the barrel being viewed at an angle, as it is obviously supposed to be since you can see the top. That doesn't make the bottom of the barrel rounded. Since the 'bulge' at the bottom correponds with the 'dip' at the top, you can see that the sides of the barrel are even, and the bulging is caused purely by the perspective.

The skulls are ripped up, just not so much on the chem barrel... I might change the bottom to be straight, but I like how it looks and I don't see any pressing need to change it, especially since you won't really notice it at all in-game when you're generally standing above the object.

Weebarrels wobble but they don't fall down...

Prefered the look of the original modem inregards to the skulls alot more. Once you start going down that road of artistic license, you end up with something that in the end is very different to the original and isn`t System Shock-ish. Much in the way that Rebirth went with some of the models. Looking at the latest screenshots, the barrels look alot more like something from the game Stalker, than System Shock really. Thats the impression I get when I look at it.
That said its just a barrel, which doesn`t exactly scream technology. Any other models done? Itching to see something other than a barrel. Something much grander, like a pipe weapon, or a security bot or somethin.

When did it become intellectually honest to start accusing me of losing the SS design because I saw a "straight" line as curved? Oh no, he curved the bottom of the barrel (not unlike plastic barrels of today), that obviously means he's going to make the cyborg assassin end up with five asses  The goddamned things are almost identical to the original sprites, only in 3D with a much higher resolution texture (1024x1024 rescaling as necessary) and I did say I'd take a few small liberties with the material.
Have just a little faith for chrissake. :)
At the risk of repeating myself: I go to art college full-time. I work part-time. I have a baby daughter coming soon. I'm not going to pump out models every day. I'll finish as much as I can given the time I have to work. That being said, I'll look at the barrels again and make a straight version for those of you who have to nitpick to the point of absurdity and have everything 100% identical in every shape and form :) You guys can decide which is better, and when I go back to Tampa on Sunday I'll try to fix the skull specular maps.
