I don't think it can have any of System Shock's unique identifiers like a character named Shodan or a plot that resembles ss too closely.

As far as I know one is legally allowed to create stuff from scratch and put together a game. As long as they don't call the project/game/mod System Shock they should be fine.
You don't need a valid reason to sue someone. I think there are no guidelines for what is safe beyond 'Don't piss off the lawyers'. That would mean anything remotely like SS2 is a no- unless you can keep quiet and not get caught.

Exactly. It's an absolute pain in the neck trying to recruit good people and still be quite about it. This is a good way to go, if you are willing to change your name/SS number/address/friends/family ... Better call Eraser :p
Seriously though, keep it as quite as you can. Don't make a single release until it is ready for overall release. Like, don't make a site/blog/other until you have the entire project more or less ready to go. Then, once it has been spammed everywhere, it will be available for years to come.

To be a complete nitpicker... it's better to be quiet than quite.

Uhh, that's what I meant. I need to slow down my typing a bit to make sure I stop making so many typos. Either way, you understood what I meant (albiet a response to be more sarcastic then I would have liked), so my point got across to at least one person.

Yeah - sorry, I actually agree with what you said (and it's not as if the topic title contains a spelling mastake... ;)).
It would be good in some respects as if more projects actually got far enough to attract EA's attention - has anyone done an estimate on the number of different ways the medical level can be played?
icemann on 8/7/2008 at 19:24
Well no`ones done it upside down yet :p. Other than that we`ve had practically every other variation. I`m sick of medical remakes.
ZylonBane on 8/7/2008 at 19:36
Yeah, the next doomed project should do the Bridge. At least that level would really take advantage of modern 3D engines.

I've never released upside down version, but I have played it. Totally trippy.

Heh, the next doomed project. Giving the fate before the concept. I suppose after all the failed projects, I can't blame you.

It's natural that every person doing a remake is going to want to do their own thing, heedless of what anyone else says in the end. Still they should really all try and unify their work so that whatever progress they make can be shared and not wasted. Doing medical a thousand times is the worst, architecture in general is almost as bad since ppl doing remakes in different engines can't easily convert the geometry (I presume)....why not start with something more...plug'n'play like models and textures. Everything could be kept in the same file format. By eliminating redundancy you get shit done faster.
