No I'm not announcing work on a conversion project since its, frankly, more than I'm capible of doing. I was simply wondering if it would be possible to port shock1 to the open scource marathon engine. Why bother when its not all 3d and fancy? One, open scource so you get all the benefits therein(multi-platform, opengl, customization via scripting, ect ect). Two, and i could easily be wrong here and I know Zyon will be more than happy to beat me with the 'you're a bloody idiot' stick, but it at least LOOKS like they use similer techniques to achive 3d(2d sprites with a polygon based enviroment).

I JUST want to know how feasable an idea this is, and if there's any community interest. I have zero skill currently in working with the engine. However the editing tools DO exist(forge and anvile for mapping and physics). Nothing more, nothing less.

I dont see why not. Though it would require ALOT of work. But if you want to give it a go, then by all means try.

As I said, I don't have the know-how so I'm not going to announce it, try hyping it, ect ect. There's been far FAR too many failed projects in the past(and that's not even including anyone but myself).
I'm simply asking a question on feasability given shock's complexities, mini-games, cutscenes, ect. I know Aleph One can do cutscenes and has MP3/OGG support so audio and the movies arn't a problem. What I'm most concerned about is the doability of the wiring puzzles(hacking can be accomplished I THINK...if you can have physics change depending on the area you're in(I don't know if anvil lets you do that, or just dictates 'total' physics for a levelset.)

TSSHP would be a great start to get ported, we just need someone to smoothen out the edges, and get to hammering away at the enemy A.I., and there you go! Althou it looks like you are more referring to an open-source 3D engine, whereas, TSSHP is a new engine in itself, from what I understand. Too bad I can't code my way out of a torn paper bag...

No, no it isn't really. However on the possibilities this engine may or may not have I've gone to the aleph one forums to see what I can see on if the features i want are possible, and if so how realistic they are.
Al_B on 30/9/2007 at 19:37
Well, it may be possible, but it probably wouldn't be worth the effort. Many game engines of that era used horizontal floors and didn't allow slopes, which SS1 makes extensive use of. From the screenshots of Marathon that I've seen, all the floors are horizontal - although I've not played the game myself.
There are other open-source engines with OpenGL support that can handle arbitrary level geometry and if you really want 2d sprites it should be possible to implement them with billboarding.

Well I'm not going to even touch doing shock1 as I don't feel i could do it. I just was looking at aleph one for my own game/story making purposes and thought 'hey...would it be possible if...?'
William Dojinn on 2/10/2007 at 14:26
After poking around I have found that Aleph One can NOT do slanted slopes. Ok well it CAN, but its an ugly hack that won't work for shock1(basicly build a staircase then cover the top part with a polygon).

So engine ports don't fall under danger of getting foxxed?
Funny that a remake would then since the usual legal leverage used by the IP owner is that original game assets are being used...
I do have my story correct, right? I remember hearing about a Shock 2 remake that got menaced into dispersing by EA's legal team...

Generally they can do, but its theorised that using the engine from another EA game would possibly be acceptable, as you'd have to buy the new game to run it.
