Ok, while there's quite a bit about the puzzle here, I couldn't find anything about my particular situation, although there are hints others might have run into a similar problem.
I have the rotating disc thingies rotated to the right symbol (I got the cutscene with the ghost saying "ooooh baby I like it" or whatever) and I'm ready to put the stones on the column.
The problem is, I can't place them on the columns -- they hover in midair above the columns, several virtual inches above the surface. When all the stones are placed, nothing happens.
I played up to that point from a couple of earlier saves, same thing happens. Reinstalled and re-patched, played again from the same saves, no luck.
Any ideas? Known bug? Some secret technique for placing the stones?

Are you certain that you've got them in the correct order?

I think so -- I turned the discs so the symbols are in the same order as the floor carvings, and got the cutscene that essentially says "good, you've done that right. Now place the stones".
So I've placed the stones on the corresponding columns (same order as the floor carving and rotating discs). Nothing happens. The portcullis doesn't budge, no cutscene or other indication, the way downstairs is still blocked by the field. The weird thing is that the stones don't actually rest on the column, they hover in mid-air -- makes me wonder if the game is expecting the stones at different coordinates to trigger the portcullis opening.
This is the PC version, btw. If all else fails I guess I could steal the Krahoz from the rebel camp and possibly still complete the game.

Indeed you can.:ebil:
And it is quite a challenging task. When I've played through it, I usually save before I do anything regarding that quest, go and steal Krahoz just for fun, and then reload and do the Crypt.
Whether you get this working or not, I would strongly suggest you try it.

yeah, I'll have to try it -- especially since there doesn't seem to be any other way to continue with the game, other than just starting over. I did kind of want to see what was beyond that portcullis, though.
Well, thanks for comfirming that it's possible! Kind of surprised this bug hasn't turned up before, but I guess I should feel honored -- my own, unique, personal Arx Fatalis bug, how sweet!

Have you tried placing the stones corresponding to the opposite symbol?

no, I hadn't. I have now -- so much for my "bug" :D
thanks to all!
