Did anyone else notice that there are almost no shadows in Thief 4? (Based on all of the screenshots on the Square Enix site). Am I missing something? Everything looks so brightly lit and there is no lightgem either. Does anyone know if they're moving away from this (seemingly core) concept in Thief 4 or what the deal is?
serious post - I haven't been following it.

It has been brought up before. I don't think traversing shadows in context to how we know it in the previous games has been adequately displayed.
Edit: welcome to the boards

I think they have amped up the darkness, or at least the contrast a bit after the criticism. Initially they put foggy effects into "dark" areas so that darkness could be distinguished without it actually obscuring the player's vision, but it looks too unnatural and actually makes it harder to determine which areas are safe to move in. Darkness is safe. That's what players of all games know about stealth. Except Amnesia players because that game was designed backwards.
By the way, speaking of contrast, I really hope Thief 4 doesn't have that ridiculous HDR eye adaptation that always makes everything pitch black in games when there's the tiniest light somewhere in the screen. It would be really frustrating to move to the next pitch black shadow, only to find out there that it wasn't dark at all, and now the guard has spotted you.
