Deus Ex 2 is still in development and is many months from release. It employs next-generation Unreal technology and the Havok physics engine and is going to bring the Deus Ex community an entirely new set of toys to play with when the SDK is released. It will hopefully improve on its predecessor in every aspect -- especially the code. The code in Deus Ex 1 was completely not conducive to mod development. Why were very few mods ever completed for Deus Ex? Why is there not one Total Conversion mod for Deus Ex? Because the glue of any good mod, the code, was so dirty, buggy, and problematic to begin with that no mod team could tangle with it successfully. (Read the developers' notes in the .uc files sometime and you'll see what I mean) Deus Ex 2 is a brighter future for all of us.
If you've never played Shadowrun for the SNES before, I suggest you go and do it immediately:
Shadowrun ROM - (

ZSNES Emulator - (

Even if you only play the first 10 minutes of the game, it's hard not to fall in love with the world of Shadowrun. That world is based on an RPG ruleset known as Shadowrunner. It takes place in a cyberpunk world similar to that of Deus Ex. The graphics, sounds, weapons, and skill and aug systems would lend themselves very nicely to a Shadowrunner mod within the Deus Ex engine. This is one mod that could very well be a reality for Deus Ex 2.
The future is fast approaching, the day of rebirth for the Deus Ex community is coming. I plan to be on the front lines when that happens, charging ahead with a team of dedicated individuals who wants to see this mod become a reality. I propose that we start developing this mod for Deus Ex 2 -- now. Modelers can craft hi-poly models and refine them as we find out what the realistic limitations of the Deus Ex 2 engine will be. Mappers can hone their chops on the new version of UnrealEd that comes with UT2003. Story writers can begin to write an epic tale using the world of Shadowrunner, a very vivid and realized place with much to offer a creative mind. That way, when Deus Ex 2 does come upon us, our team will be prepared to piece the various modules together and watch a brilliant mod come to life with a powerful new engine. That bright future is speeding towards us and it's our for the taking.
Who's with me?

As a long-time Shadowrun GM, I of course support this, and would like to see a game set in the interesting world of Shadowrun... But I'll wait and see what DX2 is like first before jumping to mod it straight away... ;)
If it's possible and feasible, I might be willing to contribute to a project on the story side, my technical skills in modding are not great...

Prometheu$, I don't mean to be bitchy, but it's not necessary to post this message on two different boards on the same forums. Maybe you did it by accident or something, I don't know. The mod looks interesting though, hard work but interesting.

I totally understand you waiting to see what Deus Ex 2 is like before you jump on a mod team. I have "started" a handful of different mods, all with grand aspirations aimed at converting Deus Ex into something different altogether. It never worked... the code was the biggest hurdle and UnrealEd was not too friendly or stable for development purposes. 3D models were another matter altogether, as not enough compatible exporters existed.
Talgor, I hope that if you find Deus Ex 2 to be to your liking that you'll consider my Shadowrunner team. If Deus Ex 2 doesn't turn out to be as wonderful as I'm hoping, I don't expect that me or my team will continue to work on the mod any further. I see the early-start process as an opportunity to see what we can get started before the game is released -- if we can't make it work when the game comes out, that's that. No hard feelings and the skills are still intact.
Regardless, thanks for the reply.

How many people are working on this mod then?
icemann on 27/11/2002 at 08:29
KronoWolf (Prometheu$) started this up a few days ago on the planetdeusex.com forums. Good idea, but would take a mammoth-load of time to do. But would be a fantastic mod if it were done, that I would DEFINATELY download.
And its Shadowrun not Shadowrunner :p Shadowrunner sounds too Bladerunner-ish

Well you sure got my attention. I like the game, but to be honest it hasn't really painted much of a picture of the Shadowrun world so far. Are there any pre-eminent sites you can recommend that go into detail about the Shadowrun universe?
I'd like to get involved in a mod, but infortunately i have no skills to speak of. I'm getting into 3D modelling and UnrealED, so who knows, maybe by the time Deus Ex 2 is released i'll be able to contribute. Right now i'm actually going to have a go at creating one of those punker Orcs from the game in 3ds Max. Good for a laugh.

Well picture the world of Deus Ex, and then throw in orcs, elves etc etc and the hacking world of Neuromancer and thats Shadowrun for you in a nutshell.
Or for a better description just go to google and type in Shadowrun :p

Wow, I'm surprised that you posted this everywhere, already knowing about the copyright infringement.....
Here's a little story....
The company that created Shadowrun (FASA), folded a little while back and sold the intillectual rights and publishing rights to most of thier games, including Shadowrun to a company called WidKids, and sold the gaming rights to Microsoft, who now owns the exclusive rights to produce a Shadowrun computer game.
A Shadowrun mod isn't going to happen. Sorry to kill it like this, but it's true. You're better off with a pure original idea, and besides, if you're basing your mod off of the SNES game, you're going to be in for some problems...
