That said, I imagine speedrunning Thief on expert would be a different category of speedrunning - 100% - meaning all loot collected and all objectives fulfilled.
Well we have people who run Expert. 100% loot is very un-fun for a speedrun, I've heard. But the high loot requirements on expert do add some creativity anyway. (

I incorrectly assumed that the only people to reply would be people who knew what the acronym means. I did not account for the fact that someone would find the effort of writing a pithy response more rewarding than the effort of using a search engine.
Thanks for the link, InfinituS.
Haha, well done. Put him in his place perfectly.

Hey that's me! Glad to see you all enj-
there's always one eh
What the hell would be the point in a non glitch speedrun? Exploits are the point of speedruns, otherwise you're just running to the exit. There's not a lot of skill that can be involved in doing that. I don't get how people can't understand that.
Wow, congrats. You ran to the exit as fast as possible, which literally anyone could figure out the best path of in about an hour. Tell me, where's the skill in that? People spend years of their lives discovering and perfecting these exploits. As if there's no skill in that.
Lol, I just realised it was Zylon who made both of the ridiculous comments. Get your head straight, mate.

That said, looking forward to what optimizations these nerds have come up with. Hopefully there are some clever ones, not just boring engine exploits and mastery of quick jumping around through the normal path to the endpoint.

I'd just like to sincerely thank you for posting this. Your words perfectly distill the ethos and the pathos of the glitch run underworld into a scintillating flawless gem of insanity.

running to the exit..Isn't running to the exit kind of the point? It's not a speedrun without the run. It's just a speed.

I don't know what counts as a glitch or not, but the most fun speedruns for me are execution heavy. Breaking the game can be interesting, but I watch speedruns to see people play well more than anything else.
Renault on 9/7/2018 at 14:31
I always thought speedruns were about finding the best shortcuts and shortest path to your goal. Most Thief levels are non linear, so it's not like some corridor shooter where there's only one path to the end. Adding in the Expert difficulty would force the player to make even more decisions and choices on their route, depending on where the loot is placed.
Also, it appears people get upset about all of this stuff.

As Amorphous said, Expert is exactly like Normal: people figure out the best route throughout the entire level and they stick with it all the time unless someone finds a better route or someone finds a major glitch (such as the wall/door clipping that changed routes for a few missions). There is otherwise almost zero deviation from this route. Expert is trickier because you have less health and must accomplish more things, but as far as speedrunning is concerned it's the same thing.
Starker: Thief speedruns are execution heavy, especially Thief 1. Some of the tricks shown are pretty difficult to pull off even if the runners make them look easy. It's not as if this was a console game speedrun where the runner tinkers with the console memory to break the game.

When I think back on this marathon, I rather enjoyed the more restricted categories, like the all map tiles Super Metroid run and the all forts, all castles, small only Super Mario World run. The glitch heavy Doom 2016 run, in contrast, not so much. Of course, 100% runs can get tedious too, if they drag on too long, so I find that a good "balanced" category is usually the best to watch in that regard.
