Low? Compared to the rest of the internet, it's ridiculously high - I think at least 90% of people still use IE.

Are those browser stats affected by the tendency of some browsers to identify as IE* or does the software actually know?
*That's a bit like a smart kid at school playing down their intelligence just so they get accepted...

For the most part the software knows. Few browsers actually identify themselves as IE by default anymore.
When Opera did it it tagged "Opera X.XX" on the end, so you could tell that it was Opera and not IE.
