The pic got a laugh out of me. Love Penny Arcade :).

So, is penny arcade popular with those of you who would vigorously self-identify as 'gamers'? (NB - I always thought that was about on a par with 'telly addicts' in terms of being a genuine, cohesive group, but obviously what do I know. Wierdos.). I personally find it hard to read things like this without subconciously applying some kind of cynic-filter, i.e the handsome, wise-cracking characters are actually several stone heavier and are socially-backwards chairspuds.

I actually found the second one amusing - but only because I played La Pucelle Tactics (which is what I assume it is parodying, what with the character designs) and found the game to be pretty stupid.

most of the time you need to read the news item that comes with the comic to get most out of it.
I've heard this about PA before, and from where I'm standing that's a mark of failure. You shouldn't have to read a page of text to get the funny out of a comic strip.
Yes, it's important for comedy that the audience have enough global knowledge to understand the humor (ex. you need to know at least something about the news to get political comic strips), but there's a big difference from having an overall knowledge, and reading specific "news" posts written by the comic author.

I usually read the comic first so I'll better understand the news item. :p

To be honest, browsing through some of the collected editions (they have a short comment, but usually not the original news post) I didn't have a problem with that, though to be fair for the more recent ones I could vaguely recall the context anyway.

I've never found Penny Arcade very amusing, but there was one comic that I really laughed a lot at. I'd give a link if I could manage to find it.
It was an ad for computer hardward or something, and the two characters were superimposed on top of it, commenting on different parts of the picture. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Penny Arcade seems to either hit the mark perfectly or miss incredibly badly, but then I suppose on any given day you either get what they're making references to or you don't. Having said that, haven't read any web comic regularly in years.
Megatokyo used to be good for a laugh. And by laugh I mean, laughing at it not with it in any way
