...wow.
wait, let me rephrase that-
WOW
that was one of the most intense fucking movies l've ever seen. relentless. uncompromising. ruthless. whedon absolutely showed he belongs in the big leagues with this baby. no space muppets. no sophmoric philosphical pretensions. no mystical mumbo jumbo. just a story about a man, a spaceship, and a crew and it was better than just about anything in its genre that l can remember. l've watched every episode several times but this was so far above and beyond what l expected that it was almost like a different man was behind it. you genuinely feared for every character on the screen. even though whedon's typical uberwaif obsession was in full force nathan fillion fucking owned in this movie, and owned the movie. absolutely fucking badass. the series showed flashes of the fury of mal's will but here it was burning like a bonfire.
it wasn't perfect, though. l hated the 'cinema verite' graininess of the cinematography, or whatever it was. there were significant elements of the story that l didn't feel were completely thought out. summer glau has bug eyes [well, she's always had them, but they really stand out on the big screen]. shepard book was wearing cornrows. other than that it was pretty damn solid. it just felt... authentic. l'll very likely go see it again and l almost never do that anymore.
here's the part that is so tragic about the whole serenity saga- it always could have been like this. the potential was always there, waiting. if fox had just given whedon a budget, a free hand, and a fucking chance this show would have kicked ass. star trek- never really was a good as its rep, in any iteration. farscape- never saw it, never really wanted too. babylon 5- pretentious and burdened with the weight of straczynski's ego. serenity- fucked by bean counters masquerading as studio execs. as l sit and write this l remember that lucas is going to have another chance to inflict his imbecilic universe on us with the future star wars tv series. having suffered through three demonstrations of his 'vision' l am just apallled that this is going to come to pass while serenity is probably going to fall by the wayside. l know that money talks, but that doesn't mean l have to like it.
hopefully we'll see a sequel, or a revived series, or maybe just a few telemovies. l'd hate to think that this was all we were going to get but if it doesn't start to make money in the theatres or do really well on dvd [a la pitch black] this might have been the finale. if it is though, it was one hell of a coda to the show.

Ok, see, don't down talk all Star Trek. Deep space Nine was perhaps the finest space saga I've yet seen, and that includes the Firefly show. Possibly, Whedon could have made it better had he been given more time, but he wasn't, and as it stands the overall storyline, the acting, and the writing of Deep Space Nine makes it one of the better shows of the sci-fi genre in the last 10 years.

I don't know. :erg:
That first nine minutes did nothing to convince me that this movie is anything special. All I saw was posturing and cheezy dialogue, some techno-babble, cgi landscapes, and not much more.
Too little to really say anything about the movie, but it begins to feel like that this movie -- regardless of what's being said -- caters to the established Whedon fan-base and not so much to others.
I'll wait for the DVD!

What would of impressed you? Really?
You're supposed to develop an opinion on one of the 3 characters, and that opinion and interest in them will practically guarantee that you'll want to watch the whole movie. It's far from using techno-babble and cgi landscapes to make you watch it.

What?
I'm supposed to develop an opinion on one of the characters in the clip (first 9 minutes) and that'll
guarantee that I'll want to watch the whole movie? Is that what you're saying?
Sorry, no. Not by a long shot. That clip was nothing out of ordinary. None of the characters in that clip were even remotely interesting. A cliché young babe with special powers and a mysterious background (how original). A brother who wants to save him (ok, understandable, good motive). An uber cool pompous mystery man who's no doubt out to get the ass-kicking babe. Some nice looking cgi. Yeah. Real original.
I grant that the movie is probably far better than the trailer gives to understand, or that noncommittal clip of the first nine minutes. But based on those alone, there's nothing I've seen that'd put it above a dime-a-dozen tv-series.
What would've impressed me? Some original, intelligent dialogue. Characers that I could relate to, not just caricatures or posturing. Something that'd convince me that there's a real story behind this, not just an extended tv-episode. It may be just bad marketing, or good marketing but I'm just not in the target demographic for it to grab a hold, but it in any case, nothing I've seen so far has made me especially keen on seeing the movie.
The reviews seem to be good, so I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt regardless.
