no, they
are signed for 3 movies, including.. well, you know who *sniffle*. these contracts aren't mutually binding, unfortunately; the studio isn't under any obligation to actually
make any sequels.

Where'd you hear/see that, oudeis? We need a reputable source. Agent M. won't believe us otherwise & I'm at work so can't check out spec. features on the discs.
l read it a good while ago on one of the movie sites l frequent, most likely either (
http://www.darkhorizons.com/) dark horizons or (
http://www.comingsoon.net/) coming soon. the cast was signed to a three-picture deal when 'firefly' dvd sales spurred the studio to greenlight the theatrical film. if the 'serenity' dvd sells well enough we may see some sc-fi channel movies, depnding on whedon's interest. he has yet to get off his ass and make the spike telemovie/whatever he has been talking about since 'angel' got waxed, though, so don't hold your breath.

Well, the DVD has been released and we have some numbers for the first week
#3 in sales
#25 in Rentals*
Is this good/bad? I don't know, but I think we need to wait and see how it holds up over the coming weeks.
One possible reason for the low rental placing is that stores may not have wanted to buy many after looking at its box office take (therefore making it impossible to be in the top 10). Am I being realistic or just falling for desperate-fan ideas? I don't know and the bottom line is that we don't really get enough info. to know for sure.
As for the question of a three picture deal, this has been confirmed in many interviews with the cast.
Also in terms of Book's backstory,
I listened to a podcast that pointed out an interesting point. With Book around it would become progressively harder to maintain his mystery and keep his character believable, by removing him the mystery lives on and can be revealed as slow (or fast) as Joss wants.
*Edit: The #25 in rentals may not be correct, it has been listed as 12th by this site:

Hasn't Whedon given up on Firefly? Or was that just another stupid internet rumour?

I thought this (from Joss Whedon) was pretty interesting. (The Dec. 21st posting.)

It seems that all the shows I've found myself liking recently have at least one scene where some guy gets sucked into a jet turbine.
That was rokk. |m|

For the lazy ones among us, here it is:
Joss misquoted; he is NOT turning his back on Firefly ‘verse
December 21st, 2005
Joss Whedon was misquoted in Entertainment Weekly as putting the death knell on the Firefly ‘verse. All Joss was trying to say was that the movie Serenity is done and he’s moving on to other projects. I did NOT say he would never come back. Joss posted on Whedonesque to clarify the EW article:
“All right, now I have to jump in and set the record straight. EW is a fine rag, but they do take things out of context. Obviously when I said I had ‘closure’, what I meant was “I hate Serenity, I hated Firefly, I think my fans are stupid and Nathan Fillion smells like turnips.” But EW’s always got to put some weird negative spin on it. But so we’re clear once and for all: If you read a quote saying “I’d love to do more in this ‘verse with these actors in any medium” all I’m saying is that Nathan has a turnipy odor. It’s not his fault, he doesn’t eat a lot of them but everyone else in the cast noticed it and tht’s not really something I’m prepared to deal with any more. And Jewel said outright she wouldn’t do scenes with him except stuff like the SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER funeral scene which was outside in a high SPOILER wind. So if I do manage to find another incarnation for my beloved creation, it will have been totally against my will. I hope that clears everything up. Oh, and when I say I want to do a Spike movie, it means I have a bunion on my toe. -joss (by which I mean Tim) (no, actually me.) joss”
Some additional relevant comments from Joss:
“It would depend on huge numbers from the DVD,” writer/director Whedon allows. “Obviously, we are still shy of making our money back from the box office. But we are within shouting distance. Still, it would have to blow up pretty huge for a sequel to be called for.
“Mind you, stranger things have happened. And they do seem to happen to me. So it’s not like I’m shutting the door.” — Toronto Star interview
“The, um, the movie is finished. And the story is told. The world is not finished. There’s more to tell, but that’s always the case with everything I do and whether I get the chance to tell [it] or not it is up to somebody else. So I made sure that this movie had completion and didn’t feel like a glorified prequel. It’s its own piece and it wraps everything up. I have a sense of closure that I never had, and I can walk away satisfied. But if somebody tells me not to walk away, I’ll turn right back around.” — Comcast Movies interview

I've now seen all of Firefly and just got through watching Serenity.
It's a huge shame the show was cancelled. It had great characters, an awesome premise, and a helluva lot of style. I could've easily seen myself watching it for quite a few years.
But unfortunately that won't happen. Instead we got Serenity, which finishes up what would've been a great story by cramming a couple of seasons worth of material into a 2 hour movie. It wasn't bad, but it would've been far better if the plot were slow brewed and built upon rather than rushed out like it was.
With all things considered it went out with a (premature) bang instead of fizzling out, and I think it should be left as is. A theatre based sequel will only tarnish a good thing, and a continued TV series will only be good if it continues from where the last season left off rather than the movie ended. Though that probably won't happen since they'll be retreading old ground...
Yeah, it kinda sucks that the show left Mal and company hanging while they were still in their prime, but it's better than constantly dragging it out til there isn't any soul left in the show. Might as well enjoy what you got and look back on them fondly.

I have to agree. I'd love more, but it doesn't look like Whedon is going to be allowed to do it right, so it's probably for the best that they stop beating a dead horse before he's forced to jump the shark.
Ha Ha- how was that for a couple of dumb colloquialisms?

Okay, so Serenity very nearly made me cry. :(
I haven't read this monster thread through yet, I'll do that during lunch but here's my op-ed (spoilers obviously):
My wife (who hates sci-fi as a rule) and I ploughed through the boxset of Firefly in about three weeks. It was some excellent TV. I have to admire the ballsy mix of Sci-Fi and Western that actually takes the time to get to know its characters and can take the piss out of them into the bargain, doesn't bother too much with overarching plots about Federation plots and wars and nonsense, allows the space for the dynamic on the ship to live and breathe and bleed into the adventures they stumble across. We loved it.
The finale was an odd one, but a great high point... you could imagine that the show just continued on in the same fashion as it ended. Very sad that it got canned (until the movie).
Particular highlights of the series:
Our Mrs. Reynolds - Goddamn funny end to an excellent episode!
Jaynestown - Just the whole damn thing. The look on everyone's faces when they first hear that song... Jayne once he gets into the feel of the role. His rendition on the DVD extras with the wooly hat is especially <3.
Shindig - Mal ending up in an old school duel, the build-up to that was spectacular and you had a real feeling that the sexual tension between him and Inara was going to definitely boil over.
Trash - Mal meeting his sexy missus again, this time ending up butt-naked in what seemed like their worst loss yet. A classic.
Of course, no list of favourite episodes would be complete without Out of Gas, however it feels like such a peculiar episode that's so out of whack with the tone of the rest of the series - it's like the Mushroom episode from Cowboy Bebop, amazing but odd.
Then, of course, came Serenity. It delivered on every level for me. It retained the energy, humour and devotion to character that the series had but translated that into what works on the big screen. I think some people think that it should've just been a big long episode or something, but there's no doubt that it would've crashed and burned had that been the case. With a movie there's a need to change how the story is told and there is a drive for there to be a big pay-off in terms of content, this worked with elaborating on the River Tam backstory (building up the psychic part a bit more obviously) to fed into the Reavers reveal that more or less puts a wrecking ball to the Federation-like Alliance's reputation.
Anyone who even thinks to argue that this movie would've worked for people who hadn't saw the show though, needs their head seen to. The film had little in the way of character introduction beyond River and Mal, the rest were a B-Grade crew who only developed from what you knew of them on the small screen and even then, there were obvious cuts to key relationships such as Inara and Mal which were sad but necessary to the movie's pacing.
It was nice because it tied together several strands from the TV show (it's kinda obvious what Book was before a Shepard given his little cameo and you knew there had to be something to the Blue Sun Corporation who were amalgamated into the Alliance for the purposes of the movie) and it took some of the relationships further (Simon and Kaylee, Inara and Mal, Wash and Zoe) and not in ways that you might have expected either.
I don't know if I'd like to see more Firefly... It could work perhaps, but I feel like after they had achieved such a big goal, they wouldn't be able to settle into their old lives as easily, there's also the issue of painful loss that could have an effect on the crew's stability, not to mention when people start shacking up together, it almost always has to go awry from there. All in all, I was very pleased with Serenity and think it was a very worthy follow-up to Firely.
These will be dvds that I will revisit in the future.

I felt that the movie made the mistake of thinking that introducing the characters in the first ten minutes will make everyone feel for them as Firefly fans did. They understand the characters, but they haven't been through what the characters have been through. This is why a lot of people who didn't watch Firefly weren't all that bothered by the
deaths
Speaking of which I've forgotten most of Serenity. I'll have to pick it up and watch it again. Thanks for reviving the thread and reminding me!
